Tired, annoying phrases

Another that gets me is "period" at the end of a sentence. I get it, it's for emphasis, but to me it's as if I'd say "full stop" instead. Blegh. It's even worse when someone uses it when typing, as if the 'period' cannot clearly be seen.

"I'm never going to give you my lighter. Period." - Three periods, is that an ellipses?

Really? That's an oldie in my book. I used to hear this a lot in school from the black kids, in the 70s and early 80s in Florida. I have hardly ever heard it since then.

I do use "circle back" sometimes when I'm interviewing people for my reports, but it's usually to emphasize that they rambled on about several topics in a row without letting me get any questions in. I can't stand "deliverables."

The office jargon ones aside, I think sometimes these short forms are a natural or knee-jerk mantra so people can deal with the missing parts of compromise.

"You have to earn my respect" bugs me every time I hear it. I respect everyone initially until you LOSE my respect. I mean how does a baby, dog or nature "earn" respect?

I was too broad in saying "Here in California." It's more like black folks in and around the LA basin.

It's funny that you say you heard it in Florida; I have this idea in my head that the "Los Angeles Black" speech patterns are like watered-down versions of the ones in Louisiana and Florida

"My bad" - Your bad what? This phrase does not make any sense. Does that mean if you do something right, you can say "My good"?

When people end every sentence with "You know" - No, I do not know.

When people keep saying "like" during every sentence. Is it real or is it "like" it?

"A whole nother" in place or "A whole other" - nother is not a word.
