Some cool Niacin Jams:
Warning, the middle one is "Birdland" and he kinda screws up the harmonics at the beginning, but I love how he uses his shred in small bursts in a groove, it works really well. I don't like his solos, but I really like this type of stuff.

i like sheehan in niacin... far less egotistical **** in there... but he has got dennis chambers in the rythym section..!!
i don't like his solo's at all... sounds like a wasp in a f*cking jar..!! but it would be unfair of me if i said i had never tried to take one off either... technically he won't be beaten for a while.
and anyone who calls his first bass 'the wife' deserves some kind of respect eh..?

Whoa, I just learned something new about BS! I had no idea he slapped!! And I own a Niacin cd. I really need to listen to it!
I would love to hear him with a more solid tone though and in a more mellow melodic situation. There's no doubt the man can play espescially that he's now hanging in jazz/jazz fusion circles these days!

...but I agree that his "Niacin tone" is about 1000 times better than his standard rock sound, and wish he would use it much more often. Even when his solos aren't full-on "shred", it's very hard to hear any dynamics in his playing because of it.
Yeah, I loved Bryan Beller on Vai's last tour because he uses more BASS tone than Billy did on the few previous tours. Billy's tone just doesn't fit everywhere, IMO. There's too much distortion and not enough low end and not even definition on his notes. Even on Mr. Big's LIVE DVD, I wish there was more low end there.
But Billy's a super nice guy and a great player. His two solo CDs have some dang good songwriting as well as some sick chops. There's one track (The Suspense Is Killing Me, I think it's called) and Billy played it on Vai's 2005 tour. I was watching from the front row but could not figure out HOW he was playing it, which is rare for me. I asked him after the show if he was using a backing track and he said "No, but I guess I should be flattered that you think I am!"
The BX3 tour was great fun and the Niacin stuff is just amazing. I really wish they'd put out another live DVD. The one that's out (Blood, Sweat and Beers) is very much worth the purchase. Dennis Chambers just kills on it.
Now that David Lee Roth's doing the VH reunion, he needs to do the DLR Band reunion with Billy, Vai and Gregg Bissonette!

The thing I like the most about the first couple videos posted...is that he didn't slap the bass once. Not that I don't dig slap, but I just think it's just being overused, especially in the realm of bass virtuosity. Sheehan is a badass.
I didn't watch the video because I know Billy is the man. I've seen him live twice now and he never fails to impress.

I recently got the Vai DVD w/ Sheehan and Weiner and McAlpine and I think Donati on drums?
Holy crap. There's flawless, expert musicianship, and then there's THESE guys. Jaw-dropping. Always was a Vai fan, but good lord... It's just something else.

I don't always care for what he's done, but I went to a clinic that Sheehan did in Cincinnati. Not only was he amiable and funny, but watching how easily he plays is just astounding. Everything he does is accomplished with very little physical movement of the hands or fingers. Each finger has a string. He makes it look so easy.
The Astoria DVD? It really is a treat, a most excellent dvd! Also great to see Eric Sardinas pop up in The Attitude Song!

I think he's awesome, specially with Niacin. Highly original and one of the only '80s-rock bass players worth mentioning.
I agree about his solos. . . he's got an awesome tone, but the fast runs are hard to understand with the distortion, and the two neck pickups.

That dvd is a fine example of how to get live dvd's "right".
Great sound, amazing video quality, and a fantastic show. I'm happy to have seen Vai live twice, and he never fails to impress. Absolutely incredible and even better in the flesh!
