To Ramp or Not to Ramp.....

I have an ebony ramp between the P and J pickups on my Warwick. It's stuck on with double-sided tape and contoured to the body on its back and set up about 2.5-3mm from the bottom of the strings. I find it really helps my technique, stops me digging in too far, acts as a thumbrest when I'm playing the E string and helps with using a shifting thumb (i.e. anchoring on E, A and even D strings depending on what I'm playing). I'm also installing a ramp on my fretless for the same reasons. Neither of these ramps get in the way when slapping, they stop a few inches short of the end of the fingerboard.

yes, double sided tape seems to be the standard working solution. i made a thread a few weeks ago, dealing with that exact topic. you should be able to find it using the keywords nordstrand and ramp.

Why isn't yours comparable? After all, all a ramp is, is a piece of wood to reduce the distance between the strings and the body. Dye yours black and it would look like ebony.

I like playing over the neck for jazzy fingerstyle stuff. But I also like to digging in. I have no use for a ramp on my fretless, because I have enough clean fingerboard for use. However, I am seriously considering putting a ramp on Carvin AC40 (fretted) because I would definitely like that "playing on the fingerboard" feel and since there are no magnetic pups, a ramp would be a perfect solution...hmmmm

I have never used a ramp but I think it would be fun to try one. I think that it would help my technique (I’m still a bit of a noob) because I tend to dig in when I play too fast. I’m not much of a wood worker so making one is out of the question. I can just have one of my friends make me one.

I would definitely say no, no ramp for me. I like the feeling of no man's land and do not like my fingers touching anything other than the strings.

I play very hard and strive not to make contact with the pickup. I do rest my thumb on the pickup, but fingers are always in no man's land and that is where they like it.
