To sub or not to sub

I joined a band a few years back with two 12" subs. You honestly couldn't tell that they were even turned on or off. Next gig I brought my 18" EV subs and the whole band was amazed at the difference.

I have never set the HPF above 100 hz. 80hz is a good starting point, but experiement.

Thanks. Fair point but 18” - even 15” - will be too heavy. If I have the same experience with my sub as you I’ll send it back.

Update after gig.
The sub’s nicely put together and does add a bit of depth to the band’s overall sound so I’ll keep it, accepting what most of you have said that it’s not really big enough.
I had the chance to buy a barefaced one10 on eBay which I couldn’t resist, amazing little cab and, with a Markbass nano 2, worked as a monitor (no iems).
The nano DI sounded good through the PA.
I think for larger venues I need another cab and if I see another used one I’ll get it.
Thanks for your input.
