Which ones do you prefer? I picked up a nice Jay Turser last year on CL for cheap, and based on my teacher's recommendations (and all those here) stuck a set of LaBella deep talkin' flats on it. After playing for awhile I love the silky strings but am not a fan of the sound. It's a little too muddy? dull? Thumpy? I can't describe it. I remember liking the cheap rounds that were on it when I got it (which I'll put back on it before I buy new ones to confirm my preference).

Which roundwounds do you like? Any tricks I have to know re:string thickness and what will fit on a viola bass?

I bought d'addario XL's in medium gauge for short scale bass, and they fit fine. I put them on my Squier Jaguar 30" scale bass.

You may want to try pressurewounds as well, sort of like a "flattened round, not too bright, not too dull...might be the sound your looking for with that bass. I didn't like em' that much on the jaguar, cause I'm using it for rock/punk at the mo, but I imagine they would be perfect for my p bass, but...mmm their 4" shorter! :D

I have a "like new" set of pressurewounds (GHS) cut for fender type 4 inline if your interested...PM me.

jasper383, that may be the way to go. I still have the old factory rounds that came with, but my local music shop is probably still having their 1/2 price string sale so I may go and splurge for Mother's day!

The factory rounds suck compared to other strings. I have D'addario XL's on my Jay Turser 40-95 in med scale. I also prefer rounds on the Turser, although I love the Labella flats on my late 60's Realistic violin bass. Didn't care for flats on the Turser for some reason, though.

i put Medium scale Roto sound Tru-Bass 88s on my LE MARQUIS N.Y. beatles bass, there ultra low tension and are 65 to 115.
the low E sounds great and does not flap around, there were ease to fit and sound great. really got that double bass sound picking with my fingers but sound brighter when using a pick.
great tone.
