Tom Waits

He's amazing. That's about it. Great musician, I love his take on making music, the way he carries himself...and he's a pretty good actor too!

I bought Mule variations a while back, for the track with primus in it (big in japan - track 1). Listened to that many times, like it a lot, is very odd though... one great song from that album is: filipino box spring hog - an odd, strong, driving groove, i could imagine that in a skate film or something for some reason... are there any albums of his which anybody would reccomend?

I started a thread about Orphans in the Recordings section a week or two ago. I'm a big fan too. I only had enough downloads to get the first two discs of Orphans so far from eMusic. I'll finish up with the third album next month. I kinda like it this way though...3 albums is too much to absorb all at once! I'm really digging the first two. I'm glad he included "Little Drop of Poison" on there. The Road to Peace is the only one I'm not really digging so far...7 minutes of him trying to sing way too far above his range just starts to kind of grate on me.
I thought about buying this album in the store instead of downloading but then I saw it's 40 bucks so for now I'll pass.

My father, who's music collection was mostly blues, had his Franks Wild Years alblum which stood out like a sore thumb in his LP collection. Oddball records like that in his collection piqued my curiosity so I HAD to listen (probably the only reason I knew who Peter Frampton was at that age, he had the Frampton Comes Alive! LP... great stuff).
I still don't know enough of Waits to be a fan, but the melody of Cold Cold Ground stuck in my head, and I immediately recognized Way Down in the Hole from 3rd Bass acting crazy on their first CD (Flippin' off the Wall Like Lucy Ball).

Tom Waits is a great live entertainer, and I think an excellent actor too! Does anyone remember his performance as Renfield in Bram Stoker's Dracula?
I feel he should have won an award for that.

He actually ate those bugs.
Also great in Down By Law. And if you get a chance, try to hunt down the "Fishing with John" episode with Tom Waits in it. He puts a red snapper down his pants.
I enjoy his later stuff more than the earlier albums for some reason. My first Waits album was Beautiful Maladies, a best of package. I went on from there, and think I have most if not all of them now.
If you like Mule Variations any of the albums recommended so far would be good. I would also add Real Gone to the list.

In the FAQ section, a question is posed, and denied regarding Tom having throat cancer.
