This is a great forum with great folks and a lot of info, but if you--as a new player--allow yourself to get swept up in it, you can forget about what's most important: getting a decent bass and playing the holy heck out of it.
I spent more than 15 years (pre-internet) buying every shiny bass toy and as many kinds of basses as I could get my hands on when in reality I'd have done much better (and gotten much further) just sticking with one instrument (maybe a backup when I was gigging a lot) and learning every nuance of it.
I also would have saved a boatload or two of cash.
YMMV, but I discovered, through all my wanderings, that a simple P-bass style 4-banger was all I needed or wanted.
People who do a lot of studio recording or who are intense hobbyists with a ton of leisure cash might want a dozen boutique basses that do everything from have 37 strings to super-hi-tech electronics to an attachment that will bake brownies for you.
For the most part, that ain't necessary.
Doesn't matter if you spent $100 or $1500 or more-- if you have a bass that stays in tune, has a solid neck and intonates well, and that feels and sounds good to YOU--that's all that really matters.
PS-- since you are a new player, I'll add that if you decide to expand your horizons, it's my firm opinion that rather than owning a dozen basses, you can go really far in obtaining different sounds and tones by spending $$$ on a really good amp rig instead. A quality, powerful head, good cab(s) and a fairly expansive EQ will net you a world of tones.
