A clear and evident argument against '70s Fenders: people could simply do whatever they want with them without being punished. This would never have happened to a pre-CBS Fender.

I've DIY'd a couple of J bodies with just one SCPB so I'd definitely go with a custom pickguard and SCPB type pickup (Duncan's custom stacked humbucking version).

I don't see anything to get upset about. I'd be intrigued by the history of the bass. Just put the pick guard back on if it bothers you so much.

Isnt there a mod where you add a "dummy" extra single coil.pup that, when wired in series, acts as a humbucker? I've heard of people doing that with Rics that buzzed bad. Might explain why the extra route doesnt cut through pickguard, or........ I'm completely and utterly wrong. Feel free to ridicule this idea.

would be cool to have a stealth pickup in there under the guard if it would fit. or even a super hot strat single coil guitar pickup hidden away. Bet it would sound awesome with a bit of overdrive.

Given the extra route shape I'd put a Strat or Tele pickup in that place, it could sound great, really.

To be fair, it looks like a better quality route than the bridge pickup one. Think of it as a weight-relieving, speed hole. Now raise your left arm high in the air and say "Yay!"

See? You might not have been able to do that had the extra weight not been removed.

Sounds plausible to me... I'd also be curious to know if that would work.
