Took apart my 72 Jazz and found this....

I find it interesting that the foams are marked n and b. There are neck and bridge foams ? Is this a world class tone secret hidden through the decades by a secret tone foam society ?

I was about to say, you really got pissy about a very neatly done route that's perfectly hidden, but not about the fact that you got rid of the original pickups in a '72 jazz?

Yeah - remember those being on the cheap too. Our local music store had a pile (really, they piled them up) of various vintage tube heads, the standing price was a dollar a watt. I should have stocked up on those!

What it boils down to is she has are little history that she never told you about. Some other guy routed her first. Big deal. We all have secrets. If you truly care for this bass and are the person I think you are just let it go. Is it possible that you've maybe routed a bass or two in your younger days? Right.

Believe me if you make a big deal about this there will be another, probably reading in anticipation right now, more than willing to forget the little routing thing and take that bass home.

I understand OP's dissapointment, I've always liked jazz basses w/o pickguard. It sucks that he can't have the option of leaving it off. Oh well, looks good with it on anyway...

I'm not sure what this has to do with the route. And yeah, there was a time when 70s Fenders were less desirable, but that is certainly not the case now. I traded a trombone for this when I was a teenager. It played/sounded great then, still does.

Oh, you bought a used bass. I thought you bought it new.

I like what dimeified and others have said about putting a functional pup in there. That SCPB-II would be perfect. Get another guard to cut a hole in. Maybe another control plate you can put a small switch in. You'd have an interesting new sound and no damage to any original parts. Wiring would be a challenge.

of course now they are sought after, and not to bash your or anyones 70's jazz, but i remember when they were considered inferior, so that route does not surprise me. and the japanese models were further down the social caste. now they too are very sought after.

acoustic control and tube ampeg amps also languished in music stores considered outdated. i could have bought a b-15 in 1990 for 300$ in working order. i bought and sold a 1980 4001 for 400$, you could find them all day and night at that price. ok kinda going on a tangent. sorry.

hey at least it is made for 54' style pickup....I get the issue of whom you bought it from didn't tell you or maybe they didnt know themselves but as others have said the pickguard covers it, or have fun and get custom pickguard and putin new pickup.
I will say that it may affect resale value if and when you sell it, but you still may get what you paid for it at least.
Just play it or you can give it to me...lol

Use a 5 position rotary switch. If you want to do that, post the question over in the Pickups and Electronics, maybe @line6man will help.

I think it's cool. I've got a few vintage Fenders with way worse routes than that.

If anything, you could use the route and wire another single coil in there.

Yes those are the original tuners.

That's very cool. They have the same base as the big clovers of the early 70's so either someone swapped them or they were one of those carry-overs from the 66-69 run. Either way you win!
