I think it's cool he still uses just about the same stuff he always have. Some slight changes here and there, nothing fancy. But i guess battle proven and does the job fine.
I do think that's cool - he's a guy that knows what he wants, and he's not flipping equipment and sniffing every cork in sight. My gear changes more than his...and he can afford to do whatever he wants. That says something about us as musicians... that said, my son loves my playing, and my wife thinks I sound good when I'm not annoying her.
At the same time...this thread would EXPLODE if he showed up at Monster Mash playing a Dingwall with a bunch of Darkglass and 3Leaf and what not on his board.
I agree, but one has to wonder why he's not using the new Bass Whammy or a better tuner than the TU-2 (unless that's a TU-3), for example.
Hi my friends! I'm a 4 string Wal mkII owner and I actually play in a Tool tribute band. I well know that different Wals has slightly different tones, I just wonder which are the most popular settings for the onboard pre/filter eq. My settings:
Vol: 9 not pulled
Neck filter: 9 pulled
Bridge filter: 8 pulled
Balance: center

i'm not in a tribute band, but i do like to "try" to jam to some tool songs myself.....which is an ongoing working progress

This is seriously one of the prettiest Wals I've ever seen. If I ever had the money again, a Wenge top would be what I'd go for.
Ahah yes that's the body of my Wal. Remaining in topic...I use a Diesel DAWG to achieve the tipical Tool Chancellor grit with good results. My chain begins with a clean loop (tremolo->whammy->gt2->CE-5->BF-2->Delay->Envelope) signal that goes to my buffered tuner where I split it, one signal goes to a LS-2 in MIX a+b mode, the other goes through the dirty channel (modded rat -> GBE-7 -> Diesel DAWG) then return to the LS-2 in order to be blended with clean signal and is sent to my gk 1001RB-II. In this topic I've read that without a multiamp setup is better to go only through the dirty channel without blending, but I haven't tried yet. The toolmybass tone on youtube still sounds better to my ears, with a grit very present on pick attack phase and smoothened in sustain phase. In your opinion what ingredient I'm missing from the recipe ?

also tweaking minor setup details, like how high/low your strings are from the pickup/pole pieces and the trim pots in the control cavity can go a long way.

ASAP I'll post some samples of the tone for a more consistent discussion about that. It is more representative a DI recording or a miked cabinet ? @Toolmybass mixed both, I 'd like to know if standing in front of his unmiked cabinet without DI blend has the same feel as the recording on youtube.
Yes, the setup and adjustments to the electronics makes a difference. I have a couple of newer Paul Wals and his standard setup has the pickups set relatively low which makes it warmer and rounder sounding. Raising them creates it more edgy sounding, but then you may need to back off the internal trim pots if this makes the bass too hot.
