Tool tone/FX sticky thread ver. 1

Cool!

Why don't you use Turbo Rat?

I have owned the LM308 Turbo and extensively tweaked the settings to get the "sound" i was looking for and it wasn't even close. At one point i had all 3 of the Rats and came to the conclusion with a shootout of them, that Justin's HAS to be modded....The basic Turbo Rat is WAY to thin and tin sounding. I ended up going with a MohoMods Rat with the vintage Lm308 chip with the "phat mod" and an led light.

This is the Rat i used in my "Justin Chancellor's Tone with a Wal" vid on YT. It is the best sounding Rat i have ever tried!!

can you tell me where you got in touch with for the MoHoMods mod? Color me interested. I always loved the way the ProCo sounded but I of course could never get it to work with my setup. Tinny and thin indeed. output always sucked for me too. How much was the mod too if you dont mind me asking?

Wow....i had to find the orig box that my pedal came in. Still had the proco waraanty papers and Mohomods biz card with a hand written note from Chris Coats (owner)
I tried calling the number and its been disconnected and the website is now someone different.

Here is Chris' email and the specs that i had done to my Rat. You could send him an email to see if maybe he is doing these mods on the side?
If all else fails i do remember that Keely also used to do mods to the Rat
Cheers

Awesome! Thanks man.

Sorry...didnt see this until recently. I tried to go through my paypal/ebay archives. I bought it through MohoMods Ebay which also no longer exists.
But i couldnt pull up how much it was. He also supplied the orig Rat as well in the sale.

It's cool. Thanks for the info. Maybe he's under a different name now. I'll try to do some research on it.

Anyone wanna take a stab at what amp clamps they are using to mic Justin's cabs?

Dude!.....what a CRAZY coincidence....I was just thinking about this myself, probably 5min before i logged on to TB
Reason?...for the FIRST time i finally finished my stereo pedalboard and hooked everything up together and tried it out. IT is ****ing loud!. My guitarist is going to have to turn his rig up louder or upgrade lol.
I still have some hissing, here and there that i have to weed out. but wow...im impressed.
I actually have 2 Heil PR40's to mic the cabs for live gigs....and thats the only thing missing from the pic lol

My Wal envy is so real.

The clamps would be super handy though.

WOOOOWWWWWWW!!!! drooldrooldrooldrooldrool I want a Wal and some Mesa cabs SO BAD!!! Dang dude, your setup is SAF. Love it! Kudos

Yeah i've been considering the Ampclamp, however i'm not super thrilled about the idea of screwing into my Mesa. Justin's looks like it has a clamp-on style. the closest i've found have been drum mic clamps.
Bonus points for the road ready series.

I like the audix cab grabber but i would think you are pretty much stuck with what you get as far as mic placement.

Maybe combining something like the cab grabber with a drum clamp.

This may turn into a DIY project.

UPDATE: the Ampclamp S series seems to be the way to keep my cab from getting screwed.

Hey thanks man!....Im going to do a vid soon explaining my pedals/board and bass-ically (see what i did there?..lol) my whole set-up.
As i said, this is the first time I've had a full stereo setup with the dirty/clean channels. I made a "rookie" mistake and should have done my tweaking of the 2 channels separately and then listen to both, and then fine tune. I was playing some tunes this a.m and realized there was something "up"
Turns out the newer (white face) Demeter pre was acting up. I thought maybe the tubes were gone. So i took it to a trusted tech near me who has a tube tester. Turns out the tubes were still good and it was something to do with the board and or solders. He offered to re solder everything and do a "one-over" on the whole thing and only charge me an hour labour!. Pretty cool of him. He is the head tech here for TC Electronics.
Im happy its in good hands.

Hey what method are you using to run in stereo? I'm thinking of doing the same. I've got all the things needed. Except a method to run the rigs in stereo.

If you watched the DunlopTV vid...they are using a rack mount Radial JD signal splitter. The only problem with that, is you need a "thru box" and have to run the cables back and forth from board to head. I use a radial splitter but a small enough one, i have it hidden under the wedge style board.
RADIAL.jpg

So what im doing is running through my "clean" pedals first, THEN going into the input of the pedal. Out-1 goes straight to the clean head/cab via a cable snake. Out-2 goes into the Rat-Eq-GK Diesel Dawg, then (via snake) to the dirty head/cab. Saved me a hassle and some $$
Because there is no explanation weather they are using the distortion channel on the dirty head,i added the Diesel because it is the same circuit/channel built into a pedal form. I also have foot control to turn it on/off, depending on the song we are playing. I have fiddled extensively with the inline combination of the Rat-Eq-Overdriver....and there is NO way he has the overdriver "on" all the time.(which is mentioned "quickly" on the vid) Im betting they put it there after the fact, and thats the spot that was left on his board.
The video shows the BEF on his other board...but i just kept the BR2 and have both on the board and beside each other. Overkill i know. But i only wanted to build this rig once....lol

As i mentioned..i will be doing a video explaining everything...soon. Maybe even a song. Any requests?

This is a good idea too. I was thinking of running either my Mobius or my Hardwire DL8 that can both run stereo at the end of my chain and run one of their outs to a second rig. But then that would probably make me lose some control over the situation overall I think.....I think....
