Top 3 reasons you're a decent player?

1) I have a ridiculous fashion sense that translates into memorable, crazily colorful stage outfits, plus long, curly, well-loved-by-drunk-women hair

2) I have a bright metallic orange bass

3) I can, and do, dance like crazy.

1. I learned to read-transcribe-play music before picking up a bass.
2. I have good rhythm to the core.
3. I practice on songs I grew up enjoying on the radio, and considered early rock, early blues, and early country songs as basic tools for my experience (this was something that I considered important to my earlier music-study, practice, and performing).

Shoot, I can give you way more than three ;)

1. When playing a song I listen to what EVERYONE is doing and write my lines around everything that's going on, instead of simply writing what I think will make me stand out. Basically, I'm not 'above' playing something simple and grooving.

2. I always show up on time and perfectly prepared for the rehearsal or gig. In fact, I'm almost OCD about that sort of thing, and I'll go to practice with spare things for other instruments (like strings, cables, drum keys, etc...).

3. I'm easy to get along with. I can be brash and forward at times, but for the most part I'm always willing to try anything, I'm open to constructive criticism, and I never force my ideas on others unless I feel VERY strongly about them.

1. I learned time from my band director in high school. He drilled us all on being in time, on the beat, knowing where the "1" was, and feeling it inside.

2. I work with the drummer to lock it up. Being a former drummer myself, I know how to work things out to lock us together.

3. I have a good ear, and a good sense of pitch (not quite perfect pitch, but close) and got all the fear burnt out of me years ago, playing in bands where I had to learn songs on stage, in front of people. So my confidence level is high, and I own my spot on the stage.

Don't play out anymore, but here goes:
  1. Always on time
  2. Could and did fix all the bands electronic problems
  3. Always had a relible vehicle and trailer to haul the band equipment.

Other than that, I just tried not to mess up too much. :smug:

VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV

1) I'm not too choosy and will cheerfully and gratefully accept almost any gig offers from folks I respect and trust, without messing them around.
2) I'm reliable, well organised and pretty easy to work with.
3) I get through each gig without undermining my fellow musicians' confidence in me, in themselves or in the music that we're playing.

1). It's my RESPONSIBILITY to make the band sound good.
2). Lock with or support drummer's meter as necessary but still be able to play behind the beat (sleepy blues) or ahead of the beat to make the tune drive (requires the rare Mr Metronome for the drummer).
3). Play a groove for a long time without variation (as necessary) to give a tune the hypnotic feel.
4). Don't butcher a non-favorite tune just to make it "interesting" or because I'm bored. If the dance floor is full, it's interesting enough.
5). Hear what's going on when things get fanciful and blend in.
6). On time and prepared.
