most of you are very funny ... you are a decent player because you have a car, you wear wierd outfit or because you showed up on time at your gig ??? It doesn't even have something to do to actually be decent at playing bass ... it just make you desirable.

1. I have an intermediate knowledge of theory

3. I can play numerous genres with some sort of proficiency
But I still suck

1) I'm very comfortable in most genres of music and know music theory well enough to be very comfortable in most musical situations whether in the studio or live.
2) I know my role in a band setting and can hold a rock solid groove
3) I have a good ear and can catch on to songs well on the fly if/when the need arises.
That felt very vain of me to write :/

1. Reading music- I can read whatever is on the page
2. Big ears - Since I can read, I can also transcribe what I hear (For every instrument) I can also interact with and complement what the other players are doing.
3. Good sense of time and groove (Does that count as two?)

1. Decent sense of rhythm and meter (I am also a drummer)
2. I use a pick which grants me the ability to tremelo pick efficiently and play power chords easier. HA!
3. I love to play stuff in odd time signatures that force you to think about rhythm and melodies rather than just for the sake of speed.

1. I try to listen and understand input from others, without thinking of opposing arguments while still receiving the input. I don't assume I know it all, or even much of it. I learn stuff from guys much more experienced than myself as well a "dumb kids who couldn't know nuffin."
2. I don't get all unmotivated when I have to play a song that isn't one of my favorites... Because it is SOMEBODIES favorite, and somebody is digging it, and my playing it with enthusiasm (even if it is somewhat manufactured enthusiasm) will increase their enjoyment of the song, the evening, the venue, the band...
3. Practice often, even when initially unmotivated to start (motivation almost always picks up a bit). I practice "other people's favorites". I have my part ready when the band meets for rehearsal.

For me think this would be better covered by "being a decent band member" than decent player.
1: I will sit down & listen to a music genre when I'm exposed to a style of music I haven't really played. Immerse myself in it and figure out how busy or simple that style is played. Even if I don't particularily like the style of music, play it honestly with a smile on face.
2: Know that I am part of the rhythm section, leave the soloing to the other guys.
3: Willing to play whatever is needed to make the song work.
There are a lot of "better" bass players out there but somehow I've managed to keep playing in decent bands for many years with virtually no down time. A little talent and great attitude will carry you a long ways.
