In my post, I'm just trying to say that attitude is everything. Play it like you mean it.
- I'm old and have been playing longer than most of you have been alive
- I refuse to play with bad musicians
- I can pretty much remember how a song goes even if I only hear it one time
- I can cover my mistakes better than any bass player I've ever met
I always do a little bit more than I'm asked to do
1. I arrive on time.
2. I know my limitations.
3. While I know my limitations I am willing to take a leap of faith if things are not working during a song.
My goal is to be as fearless as Victor Wooten although I know I will never have anywhere near the technique and probably not theory knowledge to get me out of trouble should I stray too far.

1. I'm good at finding and staying in the pocket.
2. I can figure out new material quickly.
3. I can fill in the empty space in a song without over-playing.

I'm not making mine up, this is feedback from people who have hired me. Note that none of them have much to do with actual playing:
Interesting, that I style myself as a fancy player, and how little that matters.
- I show up on time and sober.
- I know the material assigned to me.
- I listen and respond in a musical situation.

1) I've embraced hate fully as a way of life and can convey that with the force of a thousand mule teams...whether it's death metal or a pop ballad.
2) I can play so loud that I don't need an amp or even a microphone. Just stand me next to the computer or tape deck. Won't even have to hit the record button.
3) I am a consummate professional. If I don't one-take the track, I commit ritual suicide right then and there.
...and since I'm typing this list out...I'll let you guess how that's gone for me so far...

1) Been around music all my life- Mom was an organist/choir director/piano teacher and took me everywhere. I hear harmony in everything. I can also sing, but that's kind of an aside from bass playing.
2) I've gotten more gigs by playing fewer notes than anyone in this town. Groove is king, god, law, and gospel truth. A good rhythm section working together can knock pictures off the wall when the bass and kick are locked.
3) I never wanted to be anything BUT a Bassist ever since I was 9 years old. I do not know why, and never thought to question it.

2. I'm punctual for rehersal and gigs... at least so far. If something is going down that is going to change that. The band knows as soon as I do.
3. My playing ... i can usually keep up if i keep things simple and groovy. K.I.S.S. is applied in my basslines where ever im allowed to.

The way to be a musician people want to play with, is to be a musician people want to play with.
1. Be unquestionably accountable (on time, prepared, reliable, stable gear, dressed right)
2. Be unquestionably amiable (friendly, interested in others' success, team player, positive, easy to work with)
3. Be unquestionably humble (no ego, acknowledge mistakes, ask for opinions, choose your moments)
I think many musicians make the mistake of thinking that bands want the person with the best chops. I would bet most bands would take a "good musician" who is accountable/amiable/humble over the "elite musician" who is unaccountable/unfriendly/egotistical.
BTW - I love all the emphasis in other posts about a players ability to listen. I think "listening" might be the top skill a musician can possess.

1. I ALWAYS set my ego aside and play as much or as little as I need to play to serve the song.

Hmmm... What do we put if we AREN'T a decent player?
You TRY really, really hard.
1. I can read music. That gets me gigs I wouldn't get otherwise.
2. I leave my ego at the door. I'm there to make the group - not myself - sound good.
3. I show up prepared. I practice, and I know what's expected of me.

1. I have a fairly good ear, and sence of the fretboard (allthough not perfect pitch)
2. I'm quite inovative on bass
3. I know how to write songs (infact my current bands songs are mainly build up around my bass riffs)
