top 5 BRITISH bassists whose PLAY you admire

Well,my favorites have already been mentioned many times,so i will just add one who has not been named so far,the extremely fantastic Ray Bennett. He was the bass player in Peter Banks' post-Yes band,Flash,so my fandom goes back to the 70's,but the new album released just a year or so ago is also great,with fantastic rock bass playing on every track.

Otherwise,Squire,Rutherford,Entwhistle,Bruce Thomas,are at the top of my list,and Trevor Horn gets honorable mention.

Never saw John Illsley (of Dire Straits) listed here... never was a flashy player that got noticed but always rock solid pocket player, right where he needed to be. Still active playing too.

John McVie still tops my own mental list though.

#1 Stuart Zender
#2 Geezer Butler
#3 John Paul Jones
#4 Paul McCartney
#5 Cass Lewis

A bit of a strange mix but all have strong and interesting tones while still being supportive.

Honorable mention
Gordon Sumner. His tone is so smooth you feel it more than you can hear it, a master of subtlety and nuance.

Love seeing Gary Thain getting some props here, but he was a Kiwi. Don't think New Zealand counts as part of Great Britain, although Thain certainly is in my top 5 Kiwi bassists (since I don't think I can come up with too many).

On the other hand, Scotland is still part of Great Britain, at least for the time being, and since he hasn't been honored yet, I'd like to propose a toast to James Dewar. Bonus points for the great singing voice.
