honestly, almost all my favorite bassists are British...

Roger Waters hardly knew how to play the bass except when the cameras were rolling, and in fact he disliked having to play the bass. David Gilmore wrote most of the lines and frequently showed Mr Waters how to play them live.

Does anyone from the 21st century count?

There is a reason old players are still revered from the '60's.
They were not the pioneers of the instrument.
They were not there to influence people who were.
They have nothing new to offer except adding treble which I never liked and which is the reason I play bass.
If you turned off the other tracks, would their bass playing have melody?

The only 2 modern players (Not sure of origin) I have heard that bring melody and tone to the table are
Godsmacks' bassist Robbie Merrill playing "Love Hate Sex" and Johnny Langs' bassist Jim Anton playing "A Quitter never wins". Both exceptional players who work the song perfectly.
