- Dee Murray - so under-rated, but because his playing fitted into the music so well.

- Bruce Thomas - any doubts listen to Get Happy by Elvis Costello and The Attractions. Rhythmic, melodic and inspired playing from BT throughout.

Also, may have missed him on the list here, but Bruce Foxton. Powerful, melodic playing on all of The Jam albums. Saw the Jam live a few times - fantastic sound from a trio.

Jack Bruce: excellent bassist and also a cellist.

Bruce Foxton: seriously, I was blown away the first time I heard The Jam. His tone and style are out of the world.

Mark King: I'm a huge fan of Level 42 and Mark King is for me a rarity- a bassist who can create brilliant credible basslines and songs and yet can also in that same song create a hit song people want to dance to.

Chris Squire- Had to include him on this list as I'm a Yes fan.

Paul Simonan- The Clash's bassplayer, and it takes talent for a punk bassist to play something like White Man In Hammersmith Palais (a reggae song!) and make it work.
