Top bassists who use a pick

Nigel Griggs of Split Enz played with a pick. He's really solid and plays some tasty lines. He and his group are underappreciated outside of Australasia, imo.


Now Bobby Vega... went to his clinic at Bass Player Live! over the weekend, and it was great. I took several videos of his playing, but haven't uploaded them. (Qualms of conscience over copyright issues and then because I'd recorded in portrait format but don't know how to rotate an entire video.) He was really awesome and very soulfull no matter what he was playing.

Ugh. Crappy female vocals, and not nearly as original as DFA79. I'll take JFK any day. Clatter's drummer doesn't impress me either. I'm totally shocked anyone would pick clatter over DFA79.

I've seen and heard the DFA stuff. It's pretty contrived after one or two tunes. Amy and Joe are twice as talented in my book.

Michael Starr from Alice in Chains was always one of my favorite pick-bassists. He pulled off some wicked basslines, and had great tone, too. Not to mention how cool he was.

I play with a pick as my style and like the pick style,
some of the players who have inspired me are:

Paul McCartney,
Carol Kaye,
Phil Mitchell (Dr Feelgood)
Sting (Police days)
Chris Squire!

All great pick players and players in general!

Yenz Leonhardt of Stormwarrior and Iron Savior uses a pick, and Markus Grosskopf of Helloween goes back and forth between pick and fingers. as does Dirk Schlachter of Gamma Ray.
