Sounds about right, I live in chicagoland and our band plays all over the burbs and gets payed 4 to 500 bucks a gig, but up in the city you gotta either have a huge following or have connections.

Actually it was he and his brother, they are both involved in the police inquiry, it's being investigated as "aggravated assault" if that's what it's called in the USA, it's the serious version of assault nevertheless so he's probably gonna get quite a bit of compensation, which is esp. nice in Finland since the health care is free. :D Though in this case I actually think the ones that assaulted him could pay for it, unnecessary burden on the tax payers.

Aggravated Assault...GOOD! Maybe some time in the jailhouse will cool their jets! Sorry, drunken, violent trash, those guys.

I've been trying to get my bands into a nearby small city with a good music district, and never have been able to get their bars to talk to me. A touring buddy of mine says it is almost impossible, because they have their own booking guys, their own bands, and if you aren't *real* good, tight buddies with 'em and known 'em forever, you can break in.

I see. Your issue might be more the fact that you're trying to get into a city with a "good music district". I guess I shouldn't have relied so much on a cut-and-dry big vs. small approach...and went with the "if a band is going where every other band is going (ahem...Nashville, San Francisco, New York type of place), they probably will have to fight with big dogs to get a seat" approach. The place my friend plays at is in a village of about 8,000 in the poorest and nearly least-populated county in NY. The bars in places like that seem to welcome anything with strings and a pick. And if the beer is flowing...well, there is a niche to be had.

I'll tell you one thing, in little cities/villages like that there isn't much going on after 9 pm...and there's money to be had.

I think we're just too close to Austin. Just way too many bands to choose from, so the wages are low over the entire area. You just about have to leave the CenTex.

Dance clubs, techno dens, and freakin' karaoke...GAG, GAG, GAG!!! Red River is still live music, but its a lot of punk, and, well...we don't play that. I like it, but my colleagues, not so much. And everyone knows punks don't get paid hardly anything. If they did, their fans would accuse them of selling out.

Many downtown bars have bands early, then a dj late. But the kids always say, "Why are you stopping? We don't want the dj!" Yet they dance for him, just the same.

1. Bands that care more about looks than the music
2. Guitarists that bring lots of guitars to a gig to show them off and then only use one
3. Singers that think they are funny but they are not
4. Guitarists that jump about too much (a little is ok)

Notice that none of them have anything to do with bassists that's because we are cool

theres a local band like that who i played a gig with

there guitar player spent 2 hours fixing his hair and then called over too me and said can you tune my guitars (of which he had 4) so i said "why cant you do it" to wich his reply was

i have to fix my mascara

Something I saw last Saturday: two guitarists from a following band walked to the front of the stage and blankly stared at my guitarist's hands, as if to analyze his fingering, then leaving without giving a sign or saying anything.

Is this common behavior? It smelled of contempt, badly.
