I don't mean to be harsh, but if esthetics are the issue I'd be more concerned about the strap and the cable routing than the pickguard. The orangey/reddish strap competes for the eye's attention with the guitar. The coil cable across the lower bout of the guitar cuts up the impact and visual beauty of the instrument. In my view, whenever possible, a 90° cable on the shortest path to being behind the guitar is always the best choice.

iJazz - My 2¢ are worth about 2¢ and not much more.

That strap is for my other bass; I lent my hippie style strap on the Jag to a fellow musician that gig (typical guitar'd)

Sorry, you may not be able to tell with such a small picture but that is a Precision...and it is cherryburst...and a maple fretboard.....and it has a pearloid guard......

Not shown is my '89 62 RI Jazz...in traditional three color sunburst....and rosewood fretboard....with a TORT GUARD.

I love tort pick guards and I think it would look good on your bass. A black one would look pretty slick as well. But it's really your call man.

My answer to this question is almost always tort...for lighter solid colors where the contrast would really bring out the detail in the tort. Even for darker solid colors the contrast is nice.

When you're talking bursts I don't dig it too much...though on some it does look nice.

Of course this is a very personal decision.

Tort would give it an "old school" look but to me it's not really and "old school" style bass. Mint Green is a nice match to sunburst and so is black. More of a 60's look than a 50's look. I think tort is overkill with a sunburst finish but that's just me.

I used to be tortless, then I got my awesome 69 P-bass sunburst, rosewood and tort pickguard. Well after that I just kept looking at the ash/maple 73 P-bass with a black pickguard which I thought was the perfect combo thinking "I wonder what it would look like with a tort guard" So ya now I have two basses with tort guards.

Short answer long, yes go for the tort guard, perfect mate for your sunburt P and to me just looks right.
