Do the fires help release seeds from pinecones?
Essentially yes. This ecosystem is adapted to fire, and there are a lot of seeds that are triggered to start after a fire (which burns away the brush so the trees can get a start).
Problem is that we humans have been suppressing fires for 100 years or so, thus there is a lot more fuel to burn, and when it goes it can be devastating. That pano of the trees shows scorching up 60, 80 feet.
Coupled with climate change and we're hurting. But the earth will evolve and survive.

Interesting. I've read about fires releasing seeds. Seems unintuitive that something damaging would also help to restore the forest. I guess this is natures way of replenishing itself. So if I understand you correctly, there are not enough controlled burns, and/or fires are not allowed to burn and do the job of cleaning up excess fuel due to threats to residential property?

Correct. A while ago we humans decided "fires are bad, they burn buildings" and "forest fires are bad because they destroy things". Smokey the Bear and all that. And there was truth and value in those ideas - it sucks to have your home or town burn down, and careless humans could, with a tossed cigarette or insufficiently extinguished campfire, start blazes that caused lots of destruction.
BUT, the good/bad dichotomy left out lots of shades of grey, which is that fires are a natural, normal, and necessary part of many ecosystems, and by preventing them we tamper with things in ways that have consequences we did not expect. Parenthetically, lots of "great" human ideas go like that. For example, New Zealand settlers imported rabbits for fur and meat. Great idea! Oops, they overbred and became a huge problem. No worries, we clever humans imported some stoats, which are great rabbit predators! But... the natural fauna of NZ never had predators like stoats, highly evolved killing machines that they are. So the stoats started wiping out local species. Same story has happened all over the world with different predators...

Anyway, the "fires are bad" approach led to fire suppression for about the past century, which is having major unintended consequences of super-high energy fires due to the excess of fuel. So we are having to figure out how to do more controlled burns in environments that 1) need lots of control because of human habitation; b) have a ton of fuel available making control more difficult; and c) are experiencing periods of drought making the fuel issue even more pernicious.

This is particularly true as I’m reminded of the Oakland Hills fire caused when controlled burns around the Oakland side of the Caldecott Tunnel reignited during the middle of the night, which had 25 mph winds and 80 degree temps throughout the night.
