Trace Elliot 2103X: How much to ask for?

Hi all bass cabinet lovers,

I am thinking about selling my Trace Elliot 2103 X, depending on how much I may get.

This speaker was designed before many bass players believed in 2x10" speakers or horns (built in 1990).

This cabinet has the most amazing midrange projection I ever heard, due to the 2 x5" dedicated midrange speakers. Its midrange is more open than the NL210. With a 15" sub this cabinet sounds great at high volumes, by itself with a lot of bass boost but very nice at low volumes.

Please take a look at the pictures in the attachment.

It is rated at 300 W and has about the same efficiency as the NL210, about 100 db. The two 10" Trace Elliot speakers say "200W" each.

It is in decent condition, with a few stains here and there, and I had to do some modifications (whic are all easily reversible):

1) The 5" midrange speakers are in their own box. This box is I guess supposed to isolate the 5" from the bass speaker. The cable freed through was not leak tight as the cab was shipped - I sealed the 5" chambers and that resulted in a much tigher bass.

2) Cabinet used to rattle at higher volumes - caused bu the membrane of the 5" brushing against the cables at higher amplitudes. I shimmed the speakers somewhat to not be flat against the front and that helped.

3) The Switch for the midrange volume broke once during transport - I replaced it with the identical switch, but lost the original knob.

4) There are some screw holes in the bottom from the time I had wheels on the cab.

My question for you is: How much should I ask for? It is probably one of the best soundig bass speakers every built and I want it to go to a home where the owner appreciates thie masterpiece of sound engineering.

Oh, why am I selling it. It weighs 70 lb, the NL210 only 44. And they sound about the same, with the NL having a better bass response and the Trace a better midrange resolution.

Tom Bowlus, have you seen it? I believe this would be the PERFECT addition to your collection!

LOL! If I did not have space limitations, I'd be all over it! But I gotta tell you, the basement is getting pretty darned full!

It does look pretty cool, though.

I happen to know where a nice Berg HT cab is residing in case you forgot! I might also have room for an amp head if you REALLY need the space. ;)

Seriously, let me know when you want the berg back. It's not in my way or anything, but I am sure you might like it back at some point. Thanks again for the opportunity, the generosity is very appreciated!

This thread is starting to head away from the inncent "how much is my _____ worth" thread to a thread that's starting to drift towards a spam thread.

If you want to sell it, and since you have the priveledges of being a supporting memeber, why not create a sale thread in the "For Sale: Amps and Cabs" part of the forum. Then you'll get much more response from a sellers standpoint. And you can even mention in the new thread that it's listed on bassgear.com as well. This way your intentions in the "Amps" section won't be mucked up by people trying to move thier stuff.

In attempt to make this thread more on topic for this part of the forum, I will say that this cab seems to be designed less as a standalone cabinet and more of a part of a larger multi cab setup. To be paired with a 15" or larger driver to handle the lows. Maybe even intended as part of some bi-amp rig. This is just a guess, but I will say that I would think it would sound kind of thin as a standalone cabinet since it seems to be designed this way.

..yes, you're absolutely right, I should move all sale discussions and advertisements to the "for sale" section, thank you for making that suggestion.
...now, how do I get to the for sale section? Please someone point me in the right direction....

And, yes, you're absolutely right again when you say that this is a part of a multi-cab setup. I saw this first at the Musikmesse in Frankfurt in 1990, it was presented stacked with a compact 15" speaker and a Quadravalve or Hexavalve tube head (the silver ones). The sound is absolutely phantastic. It was also available as a combo, and with lots of bass boost it sounds really good as a stand alone. The problem as a bass boosted stand-alone is that the wind noise is really noticable, which is a problem in the living room, but not on the stage. And- it does not really get very loud because of the speaker movement, nor does it get very punchy because it is so soft.

Mark King at one point played a stack of 8 of these on stage (and miked one for the PA), so - its not that is sounds this, its just not terribly loud.

Since it is designed to go with a 15" speaker it sounds much better as an extension for a good 15" speaker than most cabs because it is focussed around the midrange and treble sound, and not concerned with a lot of bass response.
