Trace Elliot is stepping up...By going small.....

When I left at the end of October, we had all safety and FCC certs, it was released to production, and the factory was in the process of procuring parts, so should not be long. They are saying first quarter on the NAMM video, and I believe it. We could have shown it at last years show, but didn't want to tip our hand.

Well, if you really want to play the ELF, its time to leave your comfort zone. Realize that this amp only provides 200 Watt. So a 1/4" - speaker out is enough. Some bass amps with a lot more power use it. So why always flaming about that?

If you prefer other amps, and they do have speakon connectors, this is absolutely OK.

I know that the electric light was not invented by improving wax candles. But most people are OK with 1/4" plugs, an old and proven way to connect amps and cabs.



There is no problem. You can daisy-chain two cabs with parallel in/out. In this case the cabs will be work in parallel mode. I don't know a single cab with a in/out, that is not wired in parallel.

My issue with not having a speakon is three fold.

Firstly it makes using two eight ohm cabinets harder, and with a single eight ohm cabinet it's a 130W amp. So either you need a high efficiency four ohm, or fancy cabling. A four pole speakon would have made chaining two eight ohm cabinets simple, which makes for a more modular set up.

My cabinets have speakon connections and I have speakon cables, so to use the amp I would need new cables which would cost me than the cost of having a speakon on the amp.

Cabinets are generally moving to speakons because it's a superior connector so it seems to be a retrograde move. But you can get jack/speakon connectors to support legacy use.

No...your reasoning is flawed, it is not harder. 1/4" jacks are still common on almost all speaker cabs. Most now have a minimum of 1/4" and one speakon. With the ELF's configuration you can simply connect the 1/4" from the amp to the first cab and speakon between the two cabs and voilà you have to eight ohm cabs connected by using two standard cables. No big deal, I don't know what you are talking about that it's harder.

There is still nothing "old" about 1/4" connectors. There still used quite commonly.

If you have an 8 ohm speaker cabinet with only one speaker input, there lies the design flaw.

You're confusing the 120 V current draw with the output wattage. Not the same. It is very reasonable to expect this amp to only draw 30 W at 120 V AC input and produce up to 200 W on the audio output which is significantly less than 120 V.

That gets brought up all the time with different amps. That rating is NOT the maximum power consumption. It's the power consumption when the amp is putting out 1/8 rated power sine wave into a resistive dummy load. It's meant to be a guideline of how much power a product consumes during normal use. Think about it as an average.

Sorry, I know you mean well, but that's not how it works. Nothing can put out more power than it consumes. See explanation above.

and you confuse current with wattage further muddying the equation. Power is current x voltage. If you can work Ohms Law you can figure out why Bobby is telling you you got it wrong.

I shall ear humble pie tonight. It's so long that I converted to cabinets with speakons (15 years cabs, 10 years speakon amps) I realise I've got it somewhat wrong, or maybe they are actually combo connectors and I've not noticed. Thanks for people who corrected the arrogance of my ignorance. Lots of d"oh, egg on face. Hopefully I've learned about the connectors (which I thought I already knew), and maybe to be more humble.

I don't think anyone's cracked a 4x5" 1000w head yet....that's REALLY REALLY small and not a lot bigger and 1590BB effects pedal. In fact the GK MB200 (which is the same wattage) is 8" deep and over 7.75" wide. This little baby Trace is only 4" deep....that's half the volume already. It's only 5.75" wide, which is 2" less than the MB200. It's also less high, MB200 = 1.75" vs 1.35" and it's 0.4lbs lighter too.
This new amp is TINY

Elf is a neat looking amp. Not the lightest but certainly the smallest of the 200w amps.
