Tracy Chapman

Thanks, I was unaware of that. But in saying, most of the information I have come across could be interpreted in various ways.
I'm referring to Tracy & Brian Koppelman: they both wanted to get their degrees first.

"Baby Can I Hold You" is a deceptively simple, yet elegant folk ballad. The simplicity is something she was very keen to portray on her debut album.
The band she's with lay it all down with grace. A very nice little song.

As for Gaga, well, I think she is a real talent, and strip away the electronic and dance elements, and you can see really strong pop songs in there. I've never had any issues with an artist who can craft a great pop song- as mentioned above, we have Neil Diamond, Carol King, Bacarach, Peter Allen, Elton John, the whole of the Brill Building and etc. Nowadays, we respect their songwriter abilities.
With Gaga, go check out "Telephone" and come back to tell me it isn't a very well written pop song. It even uses the black keys!

I'm going to guess you mean "Give me one Reason" but the OP is referring to her debut from 1987. She had another hit off that record with "Fast Car". I just looked these albums up and, surprisingly, her debut outsold the New Beginning (the one with "give me one reason") at a 4:1 ratio.

My friend lived in Mongolia for a year in the mid-2000s. He came back home blasting "give me one reason" like it was 1995 again. When I asked him why he found such a love for the song he informed me that every cover band in Mongolia did this song as part of their set. He also mentioned that it was always men who sang the song and they tended to nail it.

I've played and sang it in a cover setting.
