Tribute band

If it's a really accurate tribute, you should look into what Ozzy's bass players have used. That's be a good place to start. If that's too much, play what you feel comfortable with for that genre. If the last guy was perfect, he wouldn't be the last guy, he's still be the guy. If they insist you play what the last guy played, and it isn't Ozzy specific, I'd consider if they want you or a clone of the last guy.

For the Blizzard album I used one of Randy's 100-watt Marshall amps through a 4x12 cab and Gibson EB3 bass. The Diary album I used an Ampeg SVT vintage head (which I still have) through an 8x10 cab with my '61 P bass (natural finish).
i think a PBass and a SVT Classic n 8x10 cab would be a pretty good tribute to the guy who wrote those lines

This past Friday, I saw The Atomic Punks. A fantastic Van Halen tribute band. The singer has Diamond Dave's appearance and stage persona down to a T. The guitar player nailed Eddie too. The bass player didn't really look like Michael, and he was playing a black Fender P through and Ampeg(not sure what Mike plays). He sounded great, but like I said, it was mainly the singer/guitar player that really stood out, as in Van Halen. They had a great time up there and so did the crowd. The drummer even had an Alex look to him. I'd think, with Ozzy having so many different bassists throughout the years, as long as you dress the part(lots of black), you'll be fine

Oh yes, i remember seeing Blasko (Ozzy actual bass player) using a MusicMan Stingray4 Stealth Black (Ebony Fingerboard). It is an amazing instrument, not only for this Tribute, but also for your entire career as a bass player.

There is some there...but with not too many replies and not specific to his situation.


Not even counting the Sabbath tunes that are usually thrown in with an Ozzy Tribute....he is dealing with 10 different albums and about 11 different bassists over the years, that all played different basses. I think he is more concerned with look than actual tone.:eyebrow:

If he was asking about a Sabbath Tribute or say Iron Maiden the answer is alot easier.

In my experience both playing in and watching tribute bands, no one gives a **** what the bass player is doing except for other bass players.

Just go by what best fits the set list. You'll have to adjust depending on the song anyway, as the tone for something like Crazy Train would be a lot different than No More Tears.

Hey, thanks for the replies everyone. Alot of great advise. I do have 2 all black Fender basses. 1 P and 1 P Lyte that I did a custom overhaul on. I think that the comment about nobody cares but bass players would be pretty accurate. I'm just gonna go with black bass and black attire. What really matters will be how good does the entire band sound as a whole and will it give the audience the "feel" of actually watching Ozzy. If that doesn't come across, then I'm out!
