ive been in that situation before. i like the idea of the squier starter pack because its decent quality and the practice amp is something i would actually use. ill have to wait and see. thanks joe.

SurferJoe, I'm looking to put a tortoise shell pickguard on my VM70s Jazz Bass (maple neck/body). Do you know of any direct replacments for this that would not require drilling?

Drilling isnt the main issue IMO. The control plate is shaped differently where it meets the pickguard. Reshaping that part of the pickguard will be the main issue. Most of the holes will line up, but to my knowledge there isnt a direct replacement.
I used the following - and the instructions are pretty easy if you look at the pixs:::

#139 checking in with the final version of my tricked out Squier CV Jazz Bass...
Just finished today. Same neck, just a different headstock face.
Wired for mono and stereo out, Fender original Jazz Bass pickups, WD 3-ply mint green pickguard, unfinished (tung oiled) neck, and a nice matching headstock with some real nice Fender Jazz Bass waterslide decals under 15 coats of Deft. Rotosound RS 77LD flatwounds.
Without a flash and the light in the room is a bit yellow, so it looks cream, but it's Olympic White.
Just finished today. Same neck, just a different headstock face.

Was tinkering a bit this weekend, added a series/parallel DPDT switch (see pic below, to the right of the neck joint). Sounds absolutely badass in series, nice and beefy. I followed the instructions posted here:Link Removed
Took a good deal of routing behind the pickguard, but gave me something to do on what would have been an otherwise boring Saturday evening.

I also removed the neck, and stained it with brown Kiwi. Surprisingly effective, looks very nice. Full neck pic below:

Love this one! I would like to have a burst P, then I could paint my Roadstar II black, guilt free.

These forums are evil, guys. Here I am, pleased as punch with my new CV 60s Jazz, my first bass in 37 years, but my head keeps getting turned by these VM '70s maple natural wood bodies. They are beautiful. So, it looks like I'm settling in for a long bout of GAS.
I am curious how practical a CV neck to VM body swap is. Gotta have the vintage frets and dot inlays. LOVE my CV neck to tears.
Also I'm pretty pleased with the CV bridge unit (it seems to be identical to the Modern Player standard piece), and I'm wondering if that is a no mod swap with good fit on the VM body.
Also, do the VM bodies have the swimming pool routing in them like the CV, or are they a more traditional Jazz cutout pattern?
I'm just dreaming, but I'm also going to search eBay to see what I could get the parts for. You know, just wondering.

A BIG hole:::
I just measured my CV bridge vs. my VM. They are not the same. The CV screw pattern is about 2mm wider. Not a big problem if you are building a Frankenbass.
A small upgrade - I took off the first pickup cover I originally had on here & installed a Fender 5-string Marcus Miller chrome pickup cover. This pickup cover has a lower profile than the first one did & slap style is much easier.
