Thank you bassingeorge! I find the B string to have a strong, solid tone & good tension - no complaints at all. :)

They haven't been making them in a 5-string for very long at all. Maybe 5-6 months, IIRC? If you're in the market for a 5-string - worth checking out. ;)

Picked up a vm 5 string. It plays pretty dang good out the box. I am used to playing 35 in Laklands now but this is a pretty good jazz for now. Going to add an Audere pre and maybe some overwound Hanson pick ups and better tuners. The tuners so far have been the weak spot, and they are pretty decent. Just used to hipshots that I never have to adjust.

Cool hearing good things about the VM 5...might just go for one.

I've "modded" my Squier Matt Freeman signature...a little bit anyway. Just some covers, installed a Curtis Novak PB-V (Vintage wound) pickup some CTS pots, orange drop cap, switchcraft jack and some barrel knobs (HEAVY!). I think it looks just like a late 70's (78, 79?) P Bass.

I've looked all through this thread at the fabulous work everyone has done. My Squier CV60 J is now sitting in pieces, waiting for its own bit of originality.

I thought I read that pretty much any 10-hole Fender J pickguard will fit a J Squier...but as I shop online for them, most of the guards have too many screwholes. I really want a different pickguard, but just want the ten holes around the edges (I'm dropping the superfluous lower fingerrest thingy.) Suggestions? Recommendations?

Also, how do you replace the volume/tone knobs? That seems to be the only thing I haven't figured out how to remove/replace.

You didn't like the stock pickup in the matt freeman? Looks very nice btw.

Hey all, some really nice stuff here, can I play too?

Squier P bass, '83 MIJ. Refinished to natural ash, Hipshot D-tuner, Badass 1 bridge, Fender Black pickguard to replace the original white one.

Squier J bass, '84 MIJ. Removed the pickguard (does that even count?)

I see. My bad too though because I thought the freeman came with one of the duncan designs.

Make your own pickguard...it's not that difficult.

Unless they have setscrews, the knobs should just pull off. Sometimes they need gentle prying from underneath but be sure to protect the pickguard from dents.

I've added a mudbucker in the neck position. Each pickup has an on/off slider and an individual tone and volume knob. I made a new pickguard to cover up the additional routing. Next project is to repaint it and remove the frets!

An easy way is to pry them up gently with two spoons. Just stick the tips of the bowls under opposite sides and rock the spoons on the belly of the bowls like pulling a nail with a hammer. of course use protection underneath the spoons.

Here's my two little guys:

1. Squier Bronco : Mods : Schaller 3D4 Bridge, Classic Fender-Style Tuners, DiMarzio SuperDistortion DP218, CTS 500K Pots, Painted PG... "Fender" Decal ( I know, I know.. :rollno: )

2. Squier Jaguar ShortScale : Mods : BadAss Bridge, Schaller B4ML Tuners, DiMarzio UltraJazz (stock P is good enough!), CTS 500K Pots, Painted PG Edge & Control Plate.

Pretty sounding basses, with very different personality.

Fun to Mod & fun to play then... :bassist: ;-)
