+1 Looks great. From here it looks like you taped over the polepieces, so if you're going for new pups it would look great with no-pole pups.
I not only taped them for appearance but also to cut down on noise. And yes, I was thinking of getting EMG's originally so I'll either be going with those, which are solid black, or the basslines.
That is awesome.Just got the black with brass saddle bridge in today. Plays great! Noticed a difference right away. Looks great too. Now all that's left is the pups. I'm thinking of going the SD Seymour Duncan way. We shall see.
That's not a bad idea. But I'm really diggin that one brass accent, the bridge. Thanks for the idea though! I may have to try that at some point just to see how it looks.
I think so too. I usually use DR's but decided to give rotos another try. I may or may not end up using rotos on this bass from now on as I do like them. The red windings were just an added bonus.
While a BadAss would go very well with LPB/black, there is the matter of the bottom of the bridge almost protruding beyond the bottom of the body, on the E-string side. Factor in simple economics (a Gotoh 201 can be had for almost $60US less, and does not need to be slotted), and I will probably go with a Gotoh bridge, instead. I like the low-mid bump that a high-mass bridge can provide, and favor aggressiveness over politeness, within the J sound.
Not that it matters much as you seem to not be going the way of a BAII bridge, but I had a chrome BAII at one point and when I was modding my P I traded my chrome, slotted, for a black, unslotted, BAII. I actually like the unslotted better. It seems to sustain longer and notes ring out more clearer. So I left it unslotted.
Unslotted defeats the purpose of a BA bridge. You can move the strings out of alignment while playing. Stability in sound and playing is a BA bridge trademark. Your sustain should be golden if you slot them properly with nut files.
So, a couple weeks ago I bought a set of EMG pickups for P Bass here on the forum for $35. I didn't know what I was gonna put them in, but it was a great deal, so I bought them and figured I'd use them sooner or later. Fast forward to yesterday....
I had a few extra bucks, and Squier Affinity came up on CL for $50. I figured "what the heck ?", since it was one of the alder bodied ones. It was a bit beat up, and I'd need to change the tuners, but thought I could come up with a good gigging bass for cheap....so I bought it.
Well, then last night another Squier bass came up on CL for $65. Normally I wouldn't have bothered, but it was a 1994 MIK one (which have great necks, but plywood bodies), but the kicker is that a previous owner had changed the tuners to GOTOH VINTAGE STYLE REVERSE WIND tuners !!! So I went down this morning and bought it.
My thought was that I could make a really nice bass by combining these two basses...neck and tuners from the MIK, and the alder body from the newer one....plus the EMG pickups, and top it off with a black pickguard I had lying around.
Well, a little "massaging", and it all went together great ! Now I have one great, inexpensive gigging bass with top notch pickups, tuners, alder body, and a great feeling neck. And I'm gonna put together the parts from the other one and list the other bass on CL for $65, to recover some cost...should sel fast !!!
So total cost will be ...
BASS: $50
EMG PICKUPS: $35
GOTOH VINTAGE TUNERS: FREE
PICKGUARD: FREE
Yep, about $85 into it. I guess about $100 if you count the $15 I got the pickguard for a long time ago....
Not bad... Plays great .... gotta go buy a 9V battery though so I can hear the dang thing...I guess I better do that !!!

^^ all I can say is yeaaaaa, bad friggen a** ^^^ nice score man. And you had the fun of dismantling and rebuilding which is the even more fun part.
OK...popped a 9v in, fired up the amp...dang, this bass sounds great ! I typically like more vintage sounds, but the main act I play with now calls for a slightly more aggressive sound, and having the silence of the EMGs will be nice since most clubs seem to have terrible noise issues

I'm not living at the same place, so no more fence pics. I might just have to start using my 1966 Chevy C10 as a backdrop or something.....

Hey guys, I know this has probally been asked quite a bit but i'll give it a shot. I recently traded some things for the squier vm fretless and although I love the jazz bass body with no picguard and the pickups, i'd like to make this a fretted bass. Since I basically got this bass for free I don't mind putting a bit of cash into it to modify it and to make it my gigging bass. What is the best replacement neck that isn't breaking the bank?
