Tronographic Rusty Box Soundclips

The Rusty Box will drive the DCM properly, so you might give that a shot first. The G&L has a lot of tonal range on its own, so I imagine you'll be able to get that grindy midrange you're looking for. I've really found the Rusty Box to be user friendly.
I agree with Silky- I think the Rusty Box should be able to get you in that ballpark. It definitely excels at the bright + grindy tones, and the scooped settings on the Rusty Box are pretty fantastic (I usually am not into scooped low mids at all).
This is with a passive P-style bass through the Traynor preamp that the Rusty Box is a clone of:

I imagine with a more naturally scooped bass like a Jazz you'd be pretty close, though you could probably even get there with a P-bass and some more extreme EQ.
As a G&L player myself (L2000, though I used an L2500 as my main bass for years), my only concern would be not overdoing the bass- the lows and output in general from my L2000 can be easily overpowering into a pre.

I'm glad those clips helped you make a decision. I don't have any affiliation with Tronographic, I just love their product, and wanted to give people a tool to help them decide. There really isn't much out there for this pedal.
I know it's not the intended use for this pedal, but on a recent recording session, I used it at low gain settings (i.e. input gain just below 9 o'clock), and rolled off some top end. The result was a fantastic Motown tone that ended up working brilliantly. I simply can't say enough about this pedal.

I had the VT preordered before it's arrival. It is a great preamp pedal for a power amp, but again I prefer just a clean sound with it and it would be great if the Rusty Box offered a wider range of overdrive for my personal uses.

"We have not completely worked out the pricing yet but we estimate it will be $185 + $15 shipping within the US."
They should be out within the next couple of weeks!! Huzzah!!

if they could mod these to use standard neg. tip power supplies this pedal would never leave my board..
Still haven't heard anything and I've been on the list for months.
But (not to rub it in) I was lucky enough to get one in the classifieds. Most of my setup has been in the "experimental" phase for a bit now but I'm really liking the sounds I can get out of this thing. Its played a role in almost every show I've played since I got the thing.

Being able to bust out Jesus Lizard and Shellac tones whenever you want is enough reason to own this pedal (though it can produce more sounds than that).
What power tip do they use? I'm pretty sure I have a couple of adapters for my 1 spot.
It's 2.5mm and per the manual:
PWR Jack: connect the output plug from the AC Adapter into the PWR jack. For best results we recommend you use the AC Adapter supplied with your Rusty Box. If using an aftermarket AC Adapter, please be sure that it delivers between 24VDC and 40VDC with a minimum current rating of 100mA. The barrel connector plug coming from the AC Adapter must be center positive.

I have commented on it before, but I'll continue to sing praise for it. The Rusty Box is basically an extension of my amp and bass, to be quite honest. The last time I played a gig without it was one of my least favorite gigs because the tone just wasn't there for me. Everything after the Rusty Box has been a totally different (and much better) animal.

It's not too long of a drive from Richmond to Seattle cataract. You're more than welcome to come and use mine in the meantime

I do not think anyone here realizes just how bad I want my Rusty Box.
I'm not sure if the dude from New Brutalism/Villa Brut (etc.) uses one but I really like his tone.

Were you planning on using it with an isolated power supply with 2x12V or 2x18V spots? If so, you can get an adaptor that will reverse the polarity and just leave it attached to the parallel adaptor you would already be needing to bridge the two power supply outputs (unless there is a supply with a 24v tap?). I wonder how much headroom it will lose by using a lower voltage than the stock power supply though, as I think the large headroom is part of what makes the Rusty Box work better than other overdrive pedals (it is after all, an actual preamp more than an effect per se)...
