It'll probably tank. The Age of Westerns came and went long ago. Maybe it MIGHT be successful if Rooster Cogburn can dodge bullets like Neo, or if they introduce a new character who looks like a Transformer or one of the Avatar characters!

Holy crap, Unforgiven is almost twenty years old.
You might be right.
I had forgotten about Unforgiven. I was thinking along the lines of The Outlaw Josey Wales and The Shootist, which in my opinion were pretty much the last of the classic Hollywood Westerns. They both came out in 1976, 34 years ago, both older than a lot of the members here on TB!

1976? I think some westerns that can be considered classic have come out since then.

These are, in my mind, movies that have the makings of classic westerns. The tough-as-nails "good guys" come in and clean up the bad guys with lots of good lines and showdowns.

Big +1 here. I could never understand the obsession with John Wayne, either as an actor (not great) or as a person (ditto).
John Wayne represented the best of 20th Century American values, as promoted by the studio system which was prevalent at the time. Rugged individualism, conservative patriotic values, etc., you get the picture. I remember years ago watching a documentary about Bob Hope's USO tours; one time he brought John Wayne with him to Viet Nam. The reception Wayne got from the soldiers was akin to worship, I don't think even Jesus Christ himself ever got that kind of reception! I do agree with you, though, he was a good but not great actor, and his personal life, while never coming close to Lindsey Lohan territory, did leave something to be desired.
I'm a huge John Wayne fan, but not a huge fan of the original True Grit, FWIW.
IMHO, the Coen Brothers with Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon & Josh Brolin should have little trouble making a film that's way better.

I saw the remake the other day and I thought it was great. Jeff Bridges sounded like Billy Bob Thornton in "Swing Blade". If you can get past that, you'll like the film. Oh, whoever played the young girl did a fantastic job. Wow. She has a bright future ahead of her provided she doesn't go Lindsay Lohan.

I really enjoyed the remake the characters, the dialog, the characteristic Coen Brothers Gritty humor. Really much more true to the original book than the John Wayne version, which is still also classic to me.
I just finished watching it, and I enjoyed it. Though it seemed kinda, well, cheesy. But still good, comparable to the original in my opinion.

I don't either, though I enjoy his acting and directing, I don't think he needs to be worshiped.
