TrueVoice Pre users.

Here's a clip of my Cort Curbow Retro with passive Kent Armstrong pickups into my True Voice with a 1959 Sylvania 6SL7WGT tube direct into my computer with no added EQ.

I was trying to clip the preamp. I failed. :D

I was lucky enough to fall into a great deal for a True Voice pre with 4 tubes.

These two custom order tubes:

A GE 6SN7GTB:

A Sylvania CHS 6SL7WGT:

And, the two stock tubes that came with the preamp originally.

A Sylvania 6SN7GTD1H:

And, an unknown Sylvania with different internal architecture than the others:

I've really enjoyed swapping out the tubes. The tone knob works great. And, I discovered how amazing the TV sounds with my BSX EUB.

I've also been recording the differences with different basses, but real life has gotten in the way.

My ultimate goal is to get an IP112 to use with it as my main rig.

Would you say that the basstasters clips are a fair representation of the sound? To my ear the tung sol tube sounds like it has more of a low mid prescence which for me is awesome in the fingerstyle dept. But i prefer whatever the other tube is for playing complex chords and slap because it sounds more clear. Am i hearing things or are they really that different?

Those clips sound pretty representative to me. I have found that swapping tubes in this preamp make a far greater than normal difference (relative to 12AX7-type tubes), so if you get one, see if you can try a number of different tubes and pick the one or two that are the best for your tastes.

I'm very intrigued by the tonal balance knob too. Any comments on its usefulness?

To be honest, I am not sure that I completely understand what this knob is doing. For the most part, I try to set it where the tonal balance is the most close to "even" or "flat" to my ears, but this does not appear to be at an easily found setting (like full on, full off, or "straight up"). I'm still not entirely sure what this tone control is doing.

Tom.

So the TV only ships with one type of tube? i was under the impression that it shipped with two for some reason.

Interesting note about the tonal balance. Seems to do a great job mellowing the tone, but how? :p :D

just got my TV pre back from Brian this afternoon... he replaced the switches and placed a resistor somewhere in the chain of the signal. I'll have to ask what he exactly did.

I'll try to test out the three tubes that I have for this pre, prior to leaving for Austin (NAMM) on the 11th.

Hey Jason, what power amp are you using for this pre, the Acoustic Image?

I got the opportunity to jam through bassmonkeee's True Voice preamp last night. It was at the house of a mutual friend, who's got a bunch of assorted bass gear laying around. We ran the True Voice into the power section of an older-model SWR SM-900, powering a Carvin 4x10/1x18 stack.
The preamp sounds incredible! I had forgotten just how good it sounds when you overdrive a tube. The True Voice is a most excellent piece of gear.

You were able to overdrive the 6SN7/6SL7 in the TV? If so, that unit may not be functioning properly. I did not think that they were designed to overdrive the tube. Mine certainly stays clean, clean, clean.

We were running the TV into the input of the SWR, not the effects loop return (that didn't want to work for some reason). The OD was a result of the combination of the TV driving the tube front end on the SWR.

I wouldn't normally run into the input jack on an amp, but it was the easiest thing to do since we were just hanging out and jamming and the rig was too big and racked to mess with too much.

Ah, that makes sense.

And D-Man, it's a warm, full, tubey kinda clean. :smug:
