Yeah I’ve played the larger carol pocket and it’s very good. The super tiny one is brash and note slotting requires focus due to the small bell.

The Taylor-carol phat puppy shows up on reverb occasionally. Unfortunately it has crept up in price significantly since release. I guess being a niche thing it never got as popular as it should be. It’s a really neat design and sounds great.

I totally agree about staying away from Indian instruments and some Chinese (although they are getting better with supervision...) Trent Austin's own student brand is made in China and if Trent backs them, they must be decent. But the Indian instruments are called a trumpet-like-object for a reason.

This OP asked about a $600 budget trumpet. It isn't necessary for him to look for, settle on, a $75 cornet. I personally LOVE cornets because of their mellow sound. I have a new Carolbrass large bore & bell and a 1968 King Master copper (the best valves I own) and a 1980 Yamaha 232, just as Schilke designed it before their redone student line. I have a Getzen 3895 Custom flugalhorn too and appreciate everything good about it (valves, small bore, build quality wow) I would recommend a mint Getzen Eterna trumpet, That was one of the best so called student horns ever made! Now it's a step up horn and the 300 series is the student line https://www.getzen.com/trumpets/ I believe Ingred Jensen plays a bronze Getzen Genisis
sorry, It's just that whenever someone says cornets are The Same as trumpets, I am forced to disagree.

I understand whole heartedly. But I’m giving horns to 3rd graders etc. I don’t think they find much difference between the two breeds.

Anyhow, I do apologize to the OP for swaying off subject. If he’s got the cash to go for a great horn then by all means. I am a Getzen fan. I love my Capri! And I should have picked up that Martin Comittee trumpet when offered for $225.00. That’s worth kicking myself over.

I guess my problem I’ve always bought used about everything. Being a horn player I know and am a pretty good judge of pre-owned valve instruments.
For the money he’s wanting to spend, I’d very much consider the Getzen or Yamaha lines.

I’ve spoken for both. I know what to look for in the used brass lines. Int cornet will probably go to the grade school and the trumpet to my great nephew. Not sure yet. Might be the other way around.

The local music stores here in Tulsa all have a rent-to-own program, and any instruments returned get fully refurbished before being put back up for sale/rent. You might ask around to see if any of the music stores in your area have the same. They will likely carry the name brands mentioned in this thread, and you can't go wrong with any of those.

We have a winner! My son has lessons online from a European conductor/trumpet player, so we can’t get his help with anything secondhand. He plays Yamaha himself and recommended the 4335 (about $950 dollars). I can’t say no because I’m waiting on a custom build fretless for myself that cost nearly 4 times that.

Congratulations to you both! Sounds like a very good teacher too. I can't tell you how important it is for a young player to sit next to an accomplished player because what will be related will be beyond the words, it's the feeling of relaxation and power that comes from being grounded that you get sitting next to a player. (also proper breathing) You can't progress on trumpet unless you have that feeling transmitted. It's a lot like yoga. Working into a daily practice routine helps that too. (for 4x that the fretless should almost play itself!)

That's a nice horn. Yamaha makes excellent intermediate horns (and pro horns, too). I've got a Yamaha YFH-8310ZII flugelhorn and it plays like BUTTAH.
