I got my 4' HDMI cables from a local wholesaler for $5 each, I think they are made by Manhatten.

I think the thing people need to bear in mind is that with HDMI we're talking about digital data - which is very different from analogue instrument cables, for example - where it is possible to hear the difference with better quality!

Sure... but I admittedly abuse my instrument cables.

If I can get 4-5 years out of one, I'm more than happy.

I'm using the regular RCA cables on from my TWC box to my pretty nice HD TV. The picture is great and I can tell a difference between 720 and 1080 (going by what the box says it's transmitting).

Am I missing anything by not using a digital cable?

No. You should keep at it until the market releases a new end-all universal cable. My spidey sense says it's going to be fiber optic.
