I have been hunting around for a cheap 5 string and found a Squier on FB Marketplace for a decent price. As I started looking at it further I saw the the headstock says "Squier Precision Bass," but the body has J bass pickups. The pickguard is a P bass style, but there are 3 controls like a J bass. The serial number says it is a 2001 model made in Indonesia. I have not contacted the seller yet, but do you think someone would go through the trouble of routing out a J pickup cavity and wiring in another volume control or is this some obscure factory model.

I had that exact bass down to color and production year. That's the way they came. The neck pickup, although a single coil "J" style, is placed in the traditional "P" position.
I've been eyeballing it for a few days but I don't really play 5 sting. The color is cool tho.
Buddy of mine has one, good basses. It's a steal at 175 unless it has some issues..
I dont play 5 strings either, but I joined a new original band that has songs written that are played on that low b string and I dont want to detune that much if I can find a cheap good sounding 5 string.
Yes that was a stock Squier model. PBass body, and a Precision style neck, with 2 Jazz Bass pickups. They came in that green, a sort of sand metallic, and candy apple red. Passive pickups with a vol/vol/tone layout just like a Jazz Bass.
That's a shame: IF it was as clean as the pics and no issues, $175 was a great price. Would have made a great starter five-string.

I don't know about now, but in the past Fender and Squier didn't make a split 5-string pickup 2+3. A 5-string Jazz was all they had.

It's a Squier Pro Tone. The neck is HUGE like a freaking piece of 2x4. I couldn't play one because my fingers are too small

In a pinch you could always try stringing for BEAD if it’s that critical. Detuning your E to a low C is sorta doable even though it’s going to be super floppy and clangy - which is not necessarily a bad thing in some genres of music. But I think that’s as much drop as you’ll get before the string is resting on the fretboard.
IMO a 35” scale works much better for a 5-string bass. So that might be something to consider if you do decide to get one.
IIRC, the neck pickup on these Squier Standard series 5s has it's center line where the two halves of a P pickup would meet rather than matching up top edge to top edge like in that photo.
