Trying to like metal

Magnum. They are 40 year veterans and have like 18 or 19 studio albums. The English equivelant of an American garage band. Not much in the way of "funk" but their prog influences are noticible. Alan Barrow has been their bassist since 2002. Not flashy or technical but plays to the song and gets it done.

I'm looking to expand my musical horizons. I'm cool with the growling/screaming thing as long as it's not too high pitched. Distortion is fine but I want to be able to discern individual bass notes. If a guitar solo lasts longer than 15 seconds I'm not interested. And maybe some funk influence? Is there any James Brown/Parliament Funkadelicish metal out there?
My band, we actually cut out most of the screaming vocals for the new album. There are still some but I think it's more powerful and dynamic if used sparingly instead of every word of every song.

Not really metal but we're playing with these guys in October and the bass player is pretty famous from his previous metal band and can get super funky

Rush, metal? No. Incubus? No. But they have metalish moments. Incubus cites Rush as an influence. I remember a guy from Incubus describing their music as a mashup of Rush, Phish, and a lot of mushrooms. Not sure I ever understood that. I don't know why I posted this. :woot:

How 'bout some Steel Panther?

These guys are hilarious, saw them here in the city some years ago. Leapard print spandex, hair and their lyrics are funny as hell

Funny you mention "trying to like metal". I think resistance to rougher and tougher metal is a question of exposure. I have a 4.5 y/o kid that's been exposed to metal since he was a baby. Just yesterday we were riding in my car with some music on and suddenly he told me "dad, can we hear that song that goes TURUCUTUN-TURUCUTACU?", he was talking about this song he probably had heard 2 or 3 times before... :bassist:

This funny new taste for gutural stuff has only recently developed, I mean, he's just out of his "Kiss stage"...

Expose yourself to harder and harder metal, that's the only way for the nuances to become something you can appreciate instead of plain noise.

So here's the thing about enjoying art. Unless you are the creator of it you're gonna have to just take what you get. If you want to hear something very specific you may have to write it yourself. Just like with a lot of varieties of food, many of the really good ones are know as "acquired tastes" and take a while to grow on you, but once they do you start to wonder how you lived without it.
Music is the same. Try to not listen with the goal of liking it. Listen just to listen. Have an open mind and see if many of the aforementioned bands start to grow on you where you catch yourself humming the tune later. All in all picky leads to lonely, hungry and bored.
