Trying to like metal

Tons of standards have already been posted in this thread, so I'm gonna toss something out from left field:

Violins, choirs, latin piano passages, spastic compositions, cool bass grooves, and a groovy woman on lead vocals.

they are from Montréal ! Very proud of our talent in metal music. Beyond Creation, Augury, UnExpect, Cryptopsy....

I like a lot of world and Latin music. I never much cared for metal and was looking for suggestions for what I might like based on what I know I like and dislike. I dislike too much distortion and guitar solos. Seems that rules out a lot.

As it turns out I'm really not a fan of anything suggested so far. Guess it's not for me. I appreciate everyone's input.
If you dislike distortion, metal probably isn't for you, honestly. Distorted guitars (and usually bass as well) are kinda key to the sound.

I like Rage and some Primus.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rush are metal? Incubus? I always thought of them as your standard 90s band. And Zeppelin plays rock and roll and stolen...I mean blues. Their own blues.
Lol, no, none of those are metal.

Melechesh's vocals might not be for you, but they've got some cool grooves:

Cheesy videos notwithstanding, Primoridal's evolution from a raw black metal band in their early days to... whatever they are now, is interesting. Really dig the last couple albums:

They have a couple of live albums that I think are good introductions, covering most of their material.

"All Empires Fall"

and

"Gods to the Godless" (which is also a song).

Thanks but I'll check out the studio stuff. I'm in the middle of a 30-day vacation so I got plenty of time. I listen to music and play video games during the day and then at night, I enter Telepod A with a bottle of bourbon then I emerge from Telepod B and watch movies & UFC fights

Man... Those Primordial tunes are really good. I'm never a fan of straight-up black metal, but sometimes those bands evolve into something I can dig. Thanks for posting that.
