Trying to like metal

Sorry for the semi derail but - "Why ? " I can see wanting to expand your horizons and not knowing what they already are complicates things some but I would suggest other genre's first - such as world music i.e . Fela Kuti for funky - Ali Fouka Toure for African droning bluesish tunes or Bombino for infectious grooves and interesting guitar lines . Also there's tons of Latin music that has great range . grooves and should provide a multitude of energetic and interesting tunes to play ...... Kelly

And maybe some funk influence? Is there any James Brown/Parliament Funkadelicish metal out there?

You may like Mother's Finest - Black Radio won't Play this Record.
No metal, but heavy and funky, so you may like it. \m/ *

*) or rather \MF/ in this case :D

I like a lot of world and Latin music. I never much cared for metal and was looking for suggestions for what I might like based on what I know I like and dislike. I dislike too much distortion and guitar solos. Seems that rules out a lot.

As it turns out I'm really not a fan of anything suggested so far. Guess it's not for me. I appreciate everyone's input.

Latin? Latin metal - Wikipedia

Try Rage Against the Machine, Primus, Red Hot Chilli Peopers, Fishbone, Korn, Dream Theater, Pantera, Audioslave, Incubus, King Crimsom, Kings X, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Rush.
I like Rage and some Primus.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rush are metal? Incubus? I always thought of them as your standard 90s band. And Zeppelin plays rock and roll and stolen...I mean blues. Their own blues.

I mentioned Faith No More earlier, which fits the "funk metal" spec, but.....

Some other favorites of mine are classic Black Sabbath, early Metallica and Megadeth, Fear Factory, Iced Earth, Overkill, Shadows Fall (wish they were still around), Trivium, older Lacuna Coil, Children of Bodom, Amon Amarth.... I realize that I'm definitely moving away from the "funk metal" genre, but the OP did seem to mention "funk metal" as an aside from the metal genre in general. Most of these are more groove or riff oriented than funky, but I digress....

Something that should be asked is how heavy into the Metal genre the OP wants to get. Are we talking commercially popular stuff that one might hear on the radio these days, or are we talking more heavy stuff, or are we talking about the semi-obscure?
