Trying to like metal

I'm looking to expand my musical horizons. I'm cool with the growling/screaming thing as long as it's not too high pitched. Distortion is fine but I want to be able to discern individual bass notes. If a guitar solo lasts longer than 15 seconds I'm not interested. And maybe some funk influence? Is there any James Brown/Parliament Funkadelicish metal out there?
Guitar solos Can't Last longer then 15 seconds ?
high pitch vocals bother you ?
sorry to bust your bubble but Metal is definitely not for you!

How 'bout some modern prog rock/metal?

Following this because the idea of funk metal is strangely interesting.

I think the whole funk thing has led this thread somewhat astray. Anyone who wants to start listening to metal gets my recommendation to start at the beginning with early Black Sabbath and from there move on to Judas Priest. After that it kinda depends on what you're interested in since "metal" is made up of quite a few sub-generes.

Year of the Cobra are a duo... no guitars at all

Neurosis don't have any guitar solos or high pitched vocals. Lots of yelling, though.

Yob rarely have guitar solos (though I guess this song kinda begins with one) and the bass is usually very loud.

In SubRosa, the niche usually filled by lead guitar is instead filled by violin.

Inter Arma are just weird

Very few guitar solos in Cult of Luna. More about the song than any individual member.

Chelsea Wolfe's metal songs usually have very loud bass

There's always Sleep, who are pretty old school. Their guitar solos might run over long for you, though.

Conan don't have much in the way of soloing. Quite a lot of what you're hearing is actually bass.

Bongripper has no vocals of any kind. Bassist also sometimes posts here.

UFOMAMMUT - Ecate (Full Album 2015)
Ufomammut for maximum fuzzed out stonerness

BRUME - Donkey (Full Album 2015)
Brume is bluesy doom with eerie female vocals (bassist is the vocalist)

Sea of Bones - The Stone The Slave And The Architect
Sea of Bones played with us one time... incredibly loud and heavy (especially in such a small room)

Lament Cityscape - Sewn Into Our Palm
Played with Lament Cityscape a bunch of times. Their format constantly changes but they're always fun to see.

CHRCH (Church) - Stargazer
Chrch does have guitar solos, but they're not wanky. Bass is an enormous part of their sound. Especially live.

And... shameless plugs:
CATAPULT THE DEAD - LIVE IN CONCORD
Catapult the Dead don't have high vocals really or any guitar solos. New album tentatively set to release late October.

DUSTERN - LIVE IN OAKLAND
Dustern has guitar solos, but again, not really wanky, and usually pretty short. And obviously the bass is pretty loud. Currently finishing up our first album.

I skimmed every post in this thread but didn't see a few related ones that I expected:

Later King's X (say, some of Ear Candy onward). Tell me the song Sally isn't funky metal. If you can accept the use of loops on Manic Moonlight, there's some serious groove there too.

Dug Pinnick, e.g., things like the Massive Grooves album.

*maybe* some Jelly Jam.

Early Black Sabbath and Deep Purple (both Mk. II & III and of course IV) fit the bill for me!

Funk might not fit but it does for me - both Bill Ward & Ian Paice swing - something about both of these bands just really GROOVE for me. My dream band would be improvisational with both metal and funk elements...

Metal + Funk you say?

Twelve Foot Ninja is what you're looking for

Even though I own an extremely metal bass, it's actually the genre I listened to the least. At one point, I'd even say I hated metal.

However, after playing along to the tracks, I grew to like most of the songs! If you haven't tried already, I suggest playing along to some metal songs (the ones where you can actually hear the bass) and you may grow to like them as well. I typically go for more of a bell chime tone (low action and plenty of clank) on these songs.

Speaking of funk metal, do RATM and Primus fit in there somewhere?
