Something like the Empress Bass Compressor or Origin Cali76 Compact Bass compressor sounds real good in front of a tube amp/preamp.

I don't have a tube amp currently, but used external compression with tube amps before.
Tube compression is IMHO coupled with tube saturation, and while that can be a wonderful thing, it is not always wanted.

Blue Line SVT rig and an Aguilar compressor pedal 99% of the time.

Tightens up the sound without losing the edge, at least to my ears.

Generally speaking, a correctly designed tube amp compresses only when driven into distortion. For compression at levels below that, you need a compressor pedal.
