Tube head under 800$

In my experience as a former V-4b owner, you'll get to pick one of the following problems with that head:
  1. Your bass sounds like a guitar (i.e. distorted with more midrange than low bass)
  2. You bass isn't terribly loud
  3. You have to use a bunch of huge/loud cabs
I would definitely not recommend it for loud bass, especially at the prices they're going for these days. As a couple of people have mentioned, old Mesa bass heads are getting cheap these days. You could easily pick up a 400+ for the kind of money you're talking about.
I don't see how 1 or 3 are problems. Distorted midrangey bass sounds cool. And big cabs are how you get loud.

Yeah, definitely more of a serious bass head than a V-4b, especially if it has the graphic EQ.
I disagree. I have a D-180, and the V4B that North's bassist used when we played with them seemed to have about as much volume, and more low end. I would put them at about the same level.
