Tube head under 800$

Ampeg PF50. If/when you need more power you can run it without a load and take an XLR feed direct from the output transformer and feed that into the effects return on your Hartke to get all tube tone and 1000 watts.

Depends on the tone you want. If you're looking for tube distortion, it only really comes alive with a dynamic load (i.e. a speaker) on the end. I've tried a few other options, and none really give the sag and bloom that speakers do. Closest I've found for a reasonable price (haven't tried a Palmer, too expensive) is the Weber attenuator with the speaker motor built in, but even that doesn't really come close. If you just want tube 'warmth', though, the above is much less of an issue...

You can always check out some of the lesser known tube heads out there. I did a quick look and it looks like there's a couple Peavey AlphaBass heads on Reverb for under $400. They are 160 Watts. Though they are really clean, and don't really do the nice tube grind that some bass heads do. I gigged with one for a while with two 4x10 cabs.

This is a cool idea. Do you know if taking the signal out from the OT gives you the tonal effect that pushing an all tube power section does? To my ear that is really where the difference is, though an all tube preamp is nice.

Soon as I receive my 50t, I'll chime in. Keep in mind, but pretty sure you know, you get all of the 50 in the OT out, meaning pre and power tubes. AFAIK. Tonal difference, don't know yet.

So with the vb4 we are talking 100 watts, I fear that getting drowned out by mesa and Marshall halfstacks

I guarantee your are not, tube amps act differently than solid states and are generally capable of sounding louder than a solid state with similar amount of watts.

I played through an Ampeg B-15S 60 W with one 15" cabinet, I did push it extremely hard and I did play with a quite treblely tone, preventing the amp going into fart mode on the low notes, but I had no problems cutting through what soever in a very loud band (hardcore/math/noise rock), with a hard hitting drummer, another bass player who took care of the more traditional bass playing through a 100W Carlsbro tube amp through a cabinet with 2 15", a screaming singer and guitarist, sometimes heavily distorted, who played his Hiwatt 100W through a 4 12" cabinet.

Even played some gigs with no PA backup at smaller venues without any issues.

I particular remember playing in a small bar, where they would have different acts, especially a lot of more or less alternative rock acts, playing every night, and we played with so much power that you litterally could feel the pain from the pressure of the sound on your ear drum.

Might be the greatest gig I ever did in fact, we all played almost flawless, the energy on the small stage was so intense, and the bar was packed with people, but that is another story, I guess.
