Tube Heads

Yeah, I think a clean sound is where tubes really get it. They can do this spacious, warm three-dimensional thing. If someone wonders how a mono signal can sound three-dimensional, they'd just have to hear it. When people hear the word 'amplifier,' they tend to think of sound reproduction, not musical creation, but when you have a passive bass pickup connected straight to an electron tube, you're interactively creating.

I'm OK if you remember. Although I have TONS of respect for your knowledge and experience as well as wit, I find that, progressively, your statements on all things Ampeg are biased and credulously one-sided, (I.M.H.O. : the PF 'shenanigans'). I don't think it was always so. I do believe this erodes your hard-earned credibility. Maybe pot shots could be construed as invitations to shift for towards the middle on things. eh?

B.T.W. : I believe the 100T continues to have issues with the bias system which, along with their choosing to not take part in the conversation on the appropriate thread, irritates me. We do not have a Hodgy!:smug:

It's not all-tube, but sounds like it - a Musicman HD150 (or 130). Let's you play at full or half-power, so you can push the tubes more at comparable volume at the lower setting (volume up, master low), or keep it clean (volume down, master up) and use half or full for clean.

Or not. I don't really feel like I have to defend my credibility to you or anyone on here. Since I've been coming on here, it seems to be a sport for some people to take cheap shots at endorsers for actually liking the stuff they use. So usually I just ignore it and do what I want. I plan to in this case, too.

Jimmy's been pretty pro-Ampeg for quite a long time.

Honestly, I'm not sure why you wouldn't expect him to recommend a V4B in a discussion of 100 watt tube bass heads, given that I'm pretty sure that it's his favorite one, and the old one was long before he had an endorsement with Ampeg, if I recall correctly. Why would he not recommend a new one that weighs less, is narrower, and sounds the same? Are you trying to say he doesn't actually like Ampeg V4B amps? That's silly.

Not that I feel I need to stoop to reply to this nonsense with anything but dismissiveness, but this business about me or anyone else on here losing their credibility because of endorsements is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of in my life, and it's been getting under my skin. Especially in my case, where I have a pretty extensive and proveable track record of being complimentary to other brands when I believe they make nice stuff. I find the vast majority of endorsers really like the stuff they endorse, and only a very tiny segment of the endorser population are endorsement whores. So how dare you question other people's motives and tastes? And if anyone has a problem with it, tell it to the Marines, because guess who doesn't care?

Sartori, you went all sorts of sideways on that logic but no matter.. I was responding to Jimmy's response. Doesn't change the fact that I ( notice the "I"..) believe that he has presented as increasingly biased. Seems to me in a different manner than years previous. If that has something to do with being an endorsee whatever. I have noting against endorsees, earned privilege in my book. Just don't come across like your lifting the pom-poms in every instance, especially if someone ( or some people) may have possible legitimate cause & reasons to be dissatisfied. I really don't care what company. I'm just not drinking the " everything is better since they got rid of the last bum" Kool-Aid suggesting ALL is awesome all the time.

Just asking a guy to pause and reflect.

Why does it need to be less than 100 watts? Power tube distortion? If not, more power just means more capability in the long run.

I don't understand the fuss about Jimmy and Ampeg. He plays through Ampeg amps and knows a whole lot about them. He likes them and knows which ones are good for what. Other people know and like other things, and that's what they talk about. Take away anyone and we lose information. Nobody is misleading anyone, as far as I can tell.
