Tuner pedal question

I've been looking for a tuner pedal that is always on. But can also be muted and used when the footswitch in engaged. Basically I'm looking for something that I can use to downtune in the middle of a song without muting.

The Boss TU3w has the two outputs which allows you to do either or. So my question is if I ran a Y cable from both outputs would this allow me to do what I want?

I'm not 100% sure of your question, so I'm probably answering more than you wanted.

If you want to be able to tune while you play, you'd need to use the bypass out.

If you want to mute while you tune, you'd use the output out.

A y cable would just make it so the bypass was outputting all the time, and might introduce phase issues.

You'd either want an a-b switcher to choose which output you're using or a kill switch wired between the bypass out and your amp somewhere. The simplest thing would probably be the kill switch.

The Boss TU-3s is always on. Doesn’t mute.
I use a Polytune run from the tuner output of an Ernie Ball volume pedal. It’s always on and there’s the EB VP jr. volume/tuner pedal that can be configured to do what you need.
A headstock tuner would be a simple solution too but well...nobody likes ‘em much.

^^^ I got a Peterson Strobostomp HD on a Black Friday deal. Not only is that an option, it was the default factory setting!

This is what I went with recently....
And it is well worth the extra $ - not only options like always on - you can change the color of the display, it's large enough to read easily and a ton of other features that I have not gotten to...

Most modern tuners have always on modes.

I use the boss tu-2 and 3 sometimes as a splitter (clean and dirty amps). The korg pitchblack is a much easier to read pedal but has NO option to bypass or split.

I think if I can get it out of my head that I need to split the signal, I will get the peterson... no contest on which is better.

This old guy does that, it has two outputs one is for that purpose..

Spend the little extra to get the Peterson Strobostomp HD. You won’t regret it. Best I’ve ever used by far and does exactly what you want plus more...

I recently got a Sonic Research Turbo Tuner which is also a strobe tuner. It also can be set constantly on while the switch will mute the signal when you want. As per the manual Pass-through Mode 1: The tuner is always on. The footswitch mutes the output.
It is hands-down the best tuner I have used in 20 years. For many years I've only used clip-on headstock tuners as they are so handy, but this thing actually makes tuning up so much easier and accurate.

I haven't tried the Peterson pedal but have used their mechanical tuners as a roadie back in the 80's and 90's and they were considered the duck's nuts back then so I assume their pedals will be very good.

The Sonic Research Turbo Tuners are fantastic. That was by far the best I had tried and was my favorite pedal tuner until I got the Peterson Strobostomp HD just a few weeks ago.
