I see, I’ve seen those on other tuning gears and they’re usually clear. I know the previous owner put it there because it was black piece of plastic that was not evenly cut. I think the original sheet broke and the previous owner put a replacement and half assed it. Also I ‘aint Doing all that. I don’t trust myself. You’re sure adamant that I keep the stock tuning gears lol.
If the Hipshots are getting scarce, you need to do something until you can lay hands on some.

I suppose the funny thing i should’ve mentioned that the bass isn’t even playable right now. It has no pickups!!! That’s why it’s not a priority to fix that D tuning gear. I just wanted opinions on the hipshot, Schaller, and gotoh. I’m not even gigging. Just playing for myself right now.

You dont trust yourself? Its four pieces man, not a rocket engine.
Hey, you're talking to a guy that fried his P bass pickups trying to solder them himself. I also once tried to install a new nut on a P bass neck and completely damaged the wood. So yeah I don't trust myself to do any maintenance besides string installation and bridge adjustments. If I couldn't even do that then might as well sell all of my equipment and become a drummer.

I still have the original Fender tuners on my 68 Telecaster Bass and despite lots of wear and tear they are as good as new. Every couple of years I take then to pieces, clean them and then add a little grease before putting them back together, Takes about 30 minutes. The only problem I have is that one of the peg head posts is bent and I haven't yet figured out how to straighten it. But still, it works fine.
