Tuning... up, up and away!

Guys and gals,

Most of us have played outside the box of standard tuning, for one reason or another. Within the past couple of years, our band accommodated the former singer, by detuning a half step, allowing him to sing more in his natural range.

Fast forward to today, and our new singer can handle the tenor range of our setlist (quite well, I might add!) to the point where we're back to standard...

... except for a couple of 'keepers, no-you're-not-touching-or-replacing-that-song, yes-we're-playing-it' titles, namely 'Money'. A little low for her, in spots.

What to do? Capo? Different key (think guitar solo, so maybe not)? Maybe up, a half step? Maybe a whole step... nothing like a neck snapping off during the sax solo, right? I don't believe any of us can handle the singing duties on that particular tune, including yours truly.

Whaddya got? If we have to, it'll be done instrumentally... like I said, it's a keeper!

Well if you're going to tune up I would suggest getting the lightest gauge strings you can find because of the stiffness. You can try a capo as well and that would be the easiest way probably. Maybe you could try getting a 8 string guitar and using that for the low stuff like animals as leaders does. another thing you could try is having the audience sing the parts where she's having the most trouble and treat it like part of the show. Have her point the mic at the crowd even. A song like money everyone knows the words.

Unless the strings you use are very light to begin with, I wouldn't attempt tuning them up a whole step. If I were you I'd use a capo without hesitation.
