Two channel power amp, 1 rack space

i went looking for a 1U, two-channel amp a year ago and found these cheapies on amazon (USA):

i bought the "soundtown" version (don't remember why i chose it over the other one --- maybe it was available and the other one wasn't, IDK). i doubted the output claims, but i thought i'd give it a shot. i haven't used it exclusively (i don't always want two channels, or to biamp), but i've been very pleased with it's performance, so much so that i bought the 4-channel version when it was on sale and i use it for PA duty, monitors --- and it has also performed without issues. compact and plenty of power for my applications. i have even used my bass rig for small-ensemble PA duty!
- pros: 1U, easy to get, cheap, metal casings, feels 'solid', 8.4 lbs.
- cons: shirley the power claims are bogus?, neither the 2 or 4 channel versions can do 2-ohms (4 and 8 ohms only)

disclosure: since i don't know how much these things can be be 'disrespected' = i've been careful not to be abusive, but i have loaded them into trailers and trucks (in their rack cases) and they've held up with normal use. very handy.

Fwiw I would not go with a Stewart 1.2. Not really the strongest 1u amp out there for a number of reasons

get the most wattage version you can afford and be merry.

Only if your speakers can REALLY handle the power safely. Otherwise, you simply exchange one problem for another

I know we differ in opinions around this Andy, we’ve talked about it before. My strong sense is that as long as your expectations are realistic, performance is enhanced through any given speaker system with higher amounts of headroom. I’ve played many gigs with thousand plus w amplifiers with a 12 and never blown anything up, and enjoyed better sound. But certainly the capacity to damage your system goes up at the same time

Unrealistic expectations combined with lack of good judgement and simple accidents are the cause of many speaker failures. I see this regularly enough that it deserves reminding folks of this.

I believe Peavey had one at one time. I never actually saw one though.

Peavey DPC series, had something like 3 power levels.

The GX7 is about 10 pounds lighter.

Almost 15lbs! I think this is going to be my replacement.

It's a good choice, but may I advise you the crown XLS? It goes down to 2 ohms in stereo, can be bridged and is even lighter. So it offers more flexibility than the GX7.
But the choice is yours.

Better too much than too little. These amps seem to perform pretty well, but I don't know about availability in the states. The 1k0 is pretty cheap around here

I do not agree at all. This kind of power is useless for our needs. You'll never find any cab that can take such power. You pay for something you'll never use.

Luckily there are all kinds of amps that suits the needs of the individual That's why I mentioned that the SYNQ amps are also available in lower wattage

But there are several individuals (around here) that use +3kW poweramps into whatever cabs they fancy.

That line has been around for awhile. The issue over here was the lack of voltage selection.

Interesting that their new amp line is 1.5 RU or more.

Fantastic peice of gear, but a very pricey!

Many years ago I used a Soundtech single space power amp. I think it was 400 watts per side.

Agreed, and with damaged cabinets you pay again and again until you either develop better judgement or buy a more appropriate amp.
