Two channel power amp, 1 rack space

Does anyone know of any power amps that only take up one spot in a rack that has two channels and can output at least 500w? Does such a thing exist? I currently run a QSC GX5 and while it kicks ass it is so incredibly heavy.

Is a shallow 2u amp an option?

Not too many reasonably priced 1u amps out there.
A used Stewart World 1.2 is an option, but I think they require an extra rackspace for cooling purposes.

I wouldn't see why a shallow device wouldn't hurt. It's just the weight of the GX5 that sucks.

G5 is 12.5 kg (12.5 lb) and many class D power amps do the job being only 4 - 5,5 kg (8,8 - 12 lb) even they are 2U devices. For 1U power amps there is narrow selection and they are often pricey so if you don't definitely need them better to see elsewhere. And if you need to go to very low weight and more compact size you can always jump into class D bass amps while they are more in 2kg (4,4 lb) territory.

A QSC GXD4 or Crown XLS2502 would save you about 17lbs.

If money is not an issue, the Powersoft K2 weighs 8kg and puts out a whopping 2x 2400 Watts into 2 ohms.

I'd just stick to a 2 space and get a newer (MUCH) lighter, shallow power amp...there are plenty of choices.

Yeah I was going to say a 28 pound power amp (that is what the GX-5 weighs) is too much weight?

Compared to my lead sled amps my Powerlight 1.8 and my various PLX's are like featherweight, 21 pounds so not a big deal at all.

If weight is the only problem those Crown XLS seem excellent.
When it comes to 1U amps, the first choice that comes to my mind is the LG IPD1200/2400.
I tried both and the 1200 was already more than enough into an 810.

IMO the 1u thing is a pretty limiting factor in terms of options, performance and price unless its necessary for some reason.

If weight is the big issue, look no further than a Crest Pro-Lite. get the most wattage version you can afford and be merry.

Well, it takes less space and pretty lightweight.
The Lab Gruppen is a great amp with DSP. Its only limit is you can't bridge it. But it's already very powerful.

yes, and per my comment Re: value, the Crest (3.0) is half the cost for the same wattage. As are a number of other lightweight 2u amps. The Lab Gruppen is no slouch, dont get me wrong, but I feel like my comment is not at all refuted but confirmed by your reply.

Again if you NEED 1u, the LG IPD1200 is a great way to go, if you have the bread. Personally I'll take a Crest product any day of the week.

The LDS XS700 is an entry-level 1 unit power amp. I have the XS400 and it's good for a one cab solution.

My honest advice is to shop the big-ticket European chains if that's what you're after.

I believe Peavey had one at one time. I never actually saw one though.
