Two Note Torpedo CAB M

Subd. I really want to know if this can effectively be used as a clean preamp. Although it mainly seems designed for guitar, it’s got a bass mode, eq, cab sim, power amp sim, di, & other stuff I prob wouldn’t mess with like mic and placement. Seems like everything I need for a clean pre.

It does have a kind of graphic EQ that I sometimes prefer over a traditional preamp. But it’s not a preamp. It has good frequencies for bass that you can definitely 100% just use that live or in studio as a kind of preamp.

I just got mine today and only played with it for about ten minutes. It’s so intuitive, I feel I already know how to use it effectively; the iPad/iPhone app is very well thought out. It’s only been ten minutes, but I think I’m in love. I plugged my bass in and used headphones and I’m sure it will sound even better with my Tech21 Q/Strip. Can’t wait to use it at rehearsal.

does anyone know if it has a bypass switch? Or option?
It can be bypassed, but not with a switch; you have to bypass each section. It is an always on effect, and after all, you don’t really bypass your amp and cabinet.

True that, but theres has been sessions and gigs where I actually had to... I'm all about options.

I have had this little box since mid April. Due to my current living situation etc I have only used this at home through my basic stereo setup. Still, I will add my thoughts. For me I find all the bass cabs in this basically unusable. They all sound honky or boomy etc and no matter what I do I cannot get a decent sound out of any of them. I much prefer the guitar cabs for bass. The single 12" speakers with the right eq and mic arrangments yeild some very nice results. I am playing everything from passive P's and J's to active EMG 5 strings and can always create a patch I dig. I find the way Two Notes only gives you one mic and a cyclic muting of that sound when trying out new speakers as really frustrating. Every time I power up the unit when connected to my PC to use the interface Two Notes conduct and audit of my device to check I haven't stolen anything. I feel like a valued customer.

I’m experiencing none of this. I’m finding it amazingly useful, to the point that I’m now taking my preamp off my board. Also, I’ve been running it on a daisy chain 9v and it works just fine.

I find it very useful for sure.. I like it and when I am up and running again I hope to run it into a Crown XLS1002 power amp into a couple of 15 cabs. I just find the bass cabs don't work as well for me as the guitar cabs. Not sure why. I just thought I would put my thoughts out there.

I haven’t played with the guitar cabs yet, but I don’t doubt what your experiencing. I’m sure running it into a bass cab will alter the sound even more. I’m running it through headphones and go through a PA at practice, not my bass cab. That’s one of the things I like about it, the flexibility. I finally got to use it last night at practice and it sounded great.

There are high quality third party IR's available. ML Sound Lab have a reputable Ampeg Bass Cab Pack.

"Torpedo processing is compatible with third-party IRs, and the Torpedo C.A.B. M can load mono files in high resolution, up to 200ms in real time."

you should not be using the CAB M signal output with cabinet simulations to a bass rig (traditional speakers) UNLESS the stage rig is a full range speaker system, such as a PA. The CAB M is designed, in large part, to go between a bass/guitar amplifier's speaker output and (traditional) speaker cabinet, with the XLR tap containing the cabinet simulation to be sent to a mixing desk or other destination where a cabinet emulated sound is preferred.

It goes like this: Ampeg SVT head + 8X10 cabinet as stage rig. You tap off either the preamp out or the power amp output of the SVT head, and within the CAB M you use a complimentary cab IR selection - ideally that of an SVT 8x10, and one based on your exact version of the 8x10 - which then gets sent to the PA/recording mixer. If the stock IR profiles don't meet your liking, then you must either create your own IR for your cabinet (not a trivial task) or go in search of 3rd party cabinet IRs that closely emulate what you'd like to hear, to send to the mixing desk.

Of course, if you're using IEM or a true full-range/flat response speaker system for stage monitoring of your bass sound, you just need a preamp and can go straight into the CAB M, using the cab sim output for your speaker/IEM monitor system. If you are using a tube head, you need to make sure that there is a proper speaker load or dummy load box connect so that you don't fry the tube head. Generally no worries with a solid state amp head.

I understand what you are saying but I still think this would work. I would be plugging the CAB M into a PA amp (the Crown) into 2 x 115 Faital PR400 speakers (without tweets). The Faitals are basically PA speakers (I am just not using tweets).. The tube amp sim in the CAB M sounds nice to me. This is all in theory at this stage. I hope it works in practice.
