Two "P" pickups???

As above, it depends on what you want. I use a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder in the bridge position because it is scooped and high output. Scooped to complement the mid-heavy pickup (SPB-2) I use in the normal position. High output to be able to add enough color to the sound to make a significant difference.

Since we're on the topic of builds, any opinions on Guitar Fetish's bodies? They're the cheapest I've found so they definitely ring the "too good to be true" alarm. Anybody have experience with them?

What about 2 pickups but one is in the "Mark Hoppus" configuration. So a Z and S. What position should those be in? Could you add a 3rd J-pickup?

Two P pickups together is a great sound, like an angry Jazz with plenty of muscle to throw around. I prefer them in the reverse orientation, with the E/A side closer to the bridge than the D/G side, but that really only matters close to the bridge. And yeah, as @micguy said, don’t mount the bridge pickup too close to the bridge; I like to have at least 4cm between the E string saddle and the centerline of the E/A half of the pickup.

That version of the instrument was just the standard EMG-supplied V/V/T controls.

It sounded great and looked cool, but had other ergonomic issues. So now those pickups live in this bass, which has EMG Selector Switch/Master Volume/EXB/Master Tone controls (EXB added after this photo was taken).

do you know what happens if you get the neck pickup even closer to the bridge pickup

Thank you! Yes, it’s a scratch build. I’ve been known to build entire instruments around a single component (pickups in this case).

Still playing with pickups on mine, have the fender 62's at the neck, fender 63's at the bridge, with a Audere classic preamp installed, I find the sweet spot with bal turned to 11 o'clock giving the volume to the 63, debating to get another 63 to replace the 62 to even the tone.
all is custom build, except the fender mim roasted maple neck, an feel the body was made by k@n guitar bodies - wood was maple center with white korina wings , you can feel the notes all through this bass, love it!
pic shows with emg's but they just did not do it for me. anyone wants a deal, contact me for the pickups.
pick up spacing to Leland Sklar bass, just with my up to date parts.

I would strongly suggest you make the P pickups reverse orientation from traditional, like the two first basses pictured in this thread, gives much more balanced tone across strings.

Just for interest, this works fine for an easy first mod (this is actually mk II - mk I sounds great but looks messy).
P bass, or PJ, leave stock pickups and simply rout a new reverse P at the bridge. Wiring to personal taste, but I like the Ps in series Very Thump!

Just would like to mention one bass that features two reversed P pickups and sounds amazing...
Ibanez Roadstar RB 850 made in 1985 with two split soil pickups called J60.
The same pups can be found on RB960 and MC924 basses from the same year.
Those were the very first Ibanez active pickups.
The coils for EA and DG strings are not shifted that much apart, which makes the sound nicely balanced even for the bridge pickup.
Still, it requires the pickup housings to be really huge.
There was just a limited batch of bases with these pups built in 1985.
What a pity.
