I have an Ibanez RS824 bass that has 2vol/2tone/pickup selector switch wiring. I’m going to rewire it. How should I rewire it to get least interplay between volumes or tones? I mean how to wire it so that one volume effects only one pickup and one tone effects only one pickup?
 

I found this discussion useful for planning the VTVT controls in one of mine.

In a passive circuit you can't prevent the tone pots from affecting both pickups unless one pickup is fully switched out of the circuit. The walterw Special makes the volume pots work entirely as intended, and the tone pots about as well as you could hope for.

Circling back... That thread is for series wiring. I don't recall offhand how I wired my bass and for some reason I can't find my notes on it -- it could be parallel or series, at the time I was considering both options.

The tone pots are unpredictable though. If you leave one fully counter-clockwise the other works more or less like you expect. When you adjust both they interact in odd ways. Can be fun (with both fully clockwise, mine has an extremely dubby dub bass tone which I guess should be expected since both pots have similar capacitors). If you want an instrument whose tone can be configured repeatedly and reliably for performance it might not be your best option.

Check out the original Stack-Knob Jazz Bass wiring, and you will find a pair of fixed 'summing' resistors between the V/T stacks and the output jack. In some drawings you will find 220k, in others 220R. These isolate the stacks from each other but also attenuate the overall output, especially the 220k ones. But if you think a little you will find that the Stack-Knob scheme can be made to work perfectly well without these see that it is possible to create a circuit capable of level of isolation you like simply by rolling either or both volume controls back a little.

Firstly, be sure to wire the pickup 'hot' to the wiper of its respective volume control
Secondly, be sure to feed each tone control frrom the VOLUME WIPER connection.

Now you can isolate the pickups from each other by rolling the volumes back a bit, or have them both acting as one against the 100%/100% pickup blend.

EDIT: If you do decide to give this a go, I would recomment 500k pots for volume as they will allow a resonable degree of isolation whilst retaining reasonable output levels.

Is the pickup switch located after each vol/tone and output of switch wired to output jack?

If you’re going with individual volume / tone for each pickup then, yes, the pickup outputs go to their respective volume and tone controls. The output of each volume / tone goes to its tab on the pickup selector then the output of the pickup selector goes to the output jack. I’m sure you’re aware but don’t forget to ground everything. Most selector switches have some sort of a ground tab so you can ground the metal frame of the switch.

There are many different ways to go with that option. I had a bass with 5 holes and went with a 3 way VV TT setup that allows quick changes and a full range of blending.


Is the most versatile method, found on contemporary "Gibson" style guitars with the 3 way switch after the separate V+T for each pickup.
